59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live Report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 8 - September 11: Factoría FORD - Factoría FORD (I.T.T.), 40.1 kmTyler starts the fight club on September 11By Martin Hardie in Almusafes Starting as a favourite, on a day in which the Americas dominated the race against the clock, was Phonak's Olympic gold medallist Tyler Hamilton. With his right hand braced, Tyler somehow still managed to throw down the gauntlet on what was the real start of La Vuelta following the windswept skirmishes of the first week. Tyler told Cyclingnews after the stage that he is "used to riding with pain" and one wonders whether he doesn't in fact ride better that way. Everyone knew that the business end of the Vuelta kicked off today and Hamilton - who stated this morning he wasn't thinking of the general classification or Madrid but the stage and New York three years ago - was the rider that started the club in which this year's La Vuelta will be fought. "My hand has been hurting me a bit since my crash on stage 4 but as Olympic champion I was confident in myself," he said. "To not get the victory today would have been a disappointment. For me, it is also special because now I have won a stage in all three grand tours and not too many riders have done that." Asked if he thought he had taken enough time out of the other climbers to hang on to Madrid he replied, "To be honest I haven't seen the other times yet but my goal today was the stage. I was just focused on the stage and I haven't thought about Madrid. It was an important day for the world, it was three years ago today was 9/11 and I want to dedicate this victory to those who lost their lives in that tragedy, I think it is special that an American could win today. If I wasn't able to win I was rooting for Floyd Landis." At that point Floyd Landis, who has donned the race leader's golden jersey again, entered the room and asked Tyler, "Why didn't you let me win?" To which Tyler replied joking, "As you know Floyd is going to be my teammate next year and he was ahead at the first split time and we had a radio, so I told him to slow down." In the wake of his win today Hamilton said that he is still, "Just taking it one day at a time...again as I said, my training was really focused on a one hour event, the Olympic time trial, so I have to be honest with myself my training hasn't been focused on la Vuelta a España which is a three week race versus a one hour race. I am just going to take it day by day. Obviously today was the time trial which was completely flat and as you know starting tomorrow it is a completely different race, the race started today and we have a lot of mountains and a lot of tough stages ahead." Not only was it a top three for the Americas - Hamilton, Landis and Peña but it was also a signal as to what life might be like after Lance. All three will be together next year as Phonak shapes itself to try and take over the mantle from USPS as the Real Madrid of the cycling world. After shaking Tyler's damaged hand, race leader Landis told Cyclingnews that he "expected Tyler to win today - he won the Olympics. My objective was to win the leader's jersey...I would have like to have won, but I am happy that Tyler won, he will be my teammate next year and it was an outstanding performance." Unlike Tyler, Floyd said that he "had a hard time making the connection between the race and September 11. It was a disaster, and is of course something to remember each year". Regarding the rest of the race and tomorrow's tough finish on the Aitana, Landis said, "There are some very good climbers here and obviously Roberto (Heras) is in very good shape. He didn't lose too much time today and it was a flat time trial so I believe he will be the one to watch, to beat if someone wants to win the Vuelta." Floyd, like Tyler, says he is "going to take it one day at a time. After tomorrow, everyone will have a much better idea as to who the contenders will be two weeks from now," he concluded At the top of the leaderboard now are three rouleurs, who can climb but who have all said they have not come here with anything in mind than to simply see how things work out. That is the official line of everybody who has come here without stating that they are here to win - that is everyone probably except Roberto Heras and a few others. It is a good line to keep the media dogs at bay but it also smells a little. But the line is the result probably of a number of things: the long season that the Vuelta falls at the end of; the fact that some riders planned their season around the Tour and Athens and now for whatever reason find themselves with an unplanned trip to Spain; and of course the difficulty of this course. Nevertheless, in the next few days the fence sitting will have to stop and many riders who are here to see what might happen will have to decide whether or not they want to stay in the fight club or simply sit on the sidelines and watch the climbers take over. Of the climbers, relatively speaking they didn't have a bad day at all. But saying that, you have to remember today's winner can climb himself - the question really is whether a buffer of a minute or two is enough in the light of what is to come. Mancebo was phenomenal only losing 57 seconds, Sastre, Valverde, Aitor Gonzalez, Heras and Evans did what can be called more than an admirable job - Evans the furthest off the pace at a mere 1'47. Beloki and Cunego were the losers with losses of 3'26 and 3'58 respectively. Triki Beltran (USPS) was the great surprise coming in fourth, only 28 seconds behind Hamilton, and last year's nearly man, Isidro Nozal (Liberty), who held the fastest time after surpassing the early lead of Bert Grabsch trialled strongly to finish 37 seconds behind Hamilton. It was a tough day as the last few days have seen La Vuelta enter a humid furnace - at times today the temperature topped 35 degrees Celsius and the humidity was more than tropical in excess of 80%. These conditions will surely take their toll as will the coming days succession of climbs as we head further south through Murcia into the southern reaches of Spain. PhotographyImages by Lavuelta.com
