Piepoli victorious and Tyler cracks as Liberty returns to the peloton

With the fading of the American dominance in la Vuelta, Liberty Seguros today returned to the international peloton as Roberto Heras and Isidro Nozal stamped their mark on the race and perhaps gave us a taste of what is to come. But all was not lost for the star spangled contingent as although Floyd Landis lost time to the likes of Heras, Nozal, Mancebo, Valverde, Menchov and Sastre, he did enough to hang in there to remain in the golden jersey. He now stands 33 seconds ahead of his teammate Triki Beltran, but more importantly 38 ahead of Mancebo, 51 on Nozal, 57 on Valverde and 1'35 on Heras.
Landis lost 48 seconds today on the race favourite Roberto Heras and he will have to dig deep to be able to limit his losses day after day over the next two weeks - two weeks in which there will be very little respite at all. Although the day in the longer term belonged to Liberty with Nozal performing a mammoth task in dragging Roberto Heras within striking distance of the finish, the stage belonged to the bald Italian rider of Joxean Matxin's Saunier Duval squad, Leonardo Piepoli.

Following Joseba Beloki's mediocre performance yesterday in the flat hot Valencian time trial, the Saunier squad decided it was time to change the chip. Overall victory probably was not going to come to Beloki, who lacks the race fitness to be there at the end. The decision made within Matxin's magic yellow bus was to now aim at lighting up the roads in pursuit of stage wins. And that is exactly what they did.
Piepoli, a superb climber, known for his years with Banesto, followed Heras all the way up the final climb to the Alto de Aitana, a barren sheer wall that rises to more than 1500 metres reaching its summit in a fog bound military radar installation. Piepoli left Heras behind with 400 metres to the finish line and never looked back and went on solo to cross the line with a broad smile, polishing his soggy Saunier jersey.

It was Piepoli's second win of the season, his other of course being his fourth victory in Durango's Subida Urkiola. But even though it was close to his 30th professional win it was his first in any Grand Tour.
"I followed Roberto Heras on the climb he was riding very hard to try and take time out of his adversaries in the general," said Piepoli post-stage. "He was behind Nozal who rode extremely strongly..."
Asked by us why he wasn't thinking about the general when he is known as such a good climber, he responded "I knew that I would always lose about four minutes in a time trial like the one yesterday in Valencia, and I think that when we get to Madrid I will lose another two minutes. The chronos are pretty hard for me but I think I am a good climber, so I decided to take it easier yesterday and save myself for the mountains and to try and get my first win in a Grand Tour.
"I have won nearly thirty races now and I have always hoped I could win one in one of the Grand Tours. I think I have been going pretty well and this is my first. Next year I am going to try and continue to do the same thing in the Giro and the Tour. For me this is a very good climb, I couldn't see much of the scenery on the bike and in the fog, maybe I will get to see some on the way down in the car...but sure it's a very hard climb, it's not steep but very hard."

Tyler Hamilton was the major GC loser today as he came in 10'52 behind Piepoli. But he was not the only rider to fail as Joseba Beloki lost time yesterday and today. Speaking of this and the change in tactics of Saunier Piepoli, Piepoli said, "This year I have a grand leader but I am sorry for Joseba because he simply lacks a bit of competition. But it has given me a chance to do what I did today."
The other change that today brought about was the start of the real fight for the mountains competition and the launching of Cafes Baque's Plan Colombia. And it started right from the gun when last year's mountains winner, Colombian veteran Felix Cardenas got himself into the 14 man break that formed at the fifty kilometre mark. Cardenas spoke to Cyclingnews afterwards and told us that the mountains jersey was his and Baque's principal objective of La Vuelta.

On the descent of the day's third climb, the Cat. 2 Alto de Tollas, the ever friendly Colombian escaped from the lead group with Tadej Valjavec and Pablo Lastras. Cardenas rode in that valiant Colombian style all day but unfortunately was finally dragged back into the Heras group with three kilometres left to race. His capture was due to the incredible job done by Isidro Nozal and earlier, Darius Baranowski. But Cardenas managed to pick up a tidy few mountain points in his 109 km escape - enough to see him jump into third position in the competition and only two points behind the new leader, Paternina's David Fernandez. The Baque camp is obviously overjoyed as not only has Cardenas now given himself a solid foundation from which to launch his fight for the jersey, but it is just the sort of tonic the Basque-Colombian outfit need in their search for a new sponsor to come on board in their quest to keep the team alive in 2005.

So as the race heads further and further south, the mountains have begun and with that the day took its toll in terms of time losses and riders who didn't make it to the end. We saw two riders not take the start (Sinkewitz and Furlan) and a total of 12 victims get off their bikes en route. Four of these were from AGR2 - the reason for their withdrawal is not yet known. Amongst the others to get off were Robbie Hunter, Max Van Heeswijk, and yet another T-Mobile rider Tomas Konecny.
Tomorrow the fun continues with what is called a stage of "medium mountains" - three Cat. 3's and two cat. 2's should also be enough to once again make another telling selection in La Vuelta.
