59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live Report Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 12 - September 16: Almería - Observatorio Meteorológico de Calar Alto, 145 kmHeras soars to the starsBy Martin Hardie in Calar Alto Roberto Heras has taken the stage win and the overall lead in the Vuelta a España as Liberty Seguros continued its charge in the mountains in today's brutal 12th stage from Almería to Observatorio Meteorológico de Calar Alto. After his team had shredded most of the peloton to pieces on the final climb, Heras attacked with just over 7 km to go to pass early breakaway Paco Lara (Paternina) and solo away to victory. In second place, showing a lot of resilience was Santi Perez (Phonak), who conceded just 34 seconds to Heras in the end, while Paco Mancebo (Illes Balears) took third at 0'53, followed by Valverde and Nozal at 2'17. And after finishing 15th at 3'06, race leader Floyd Landis finally lost the gold jersey to the defending champion of the Vuelta. "Everything came out real good today," Heras told Cyclingnews after the stage. "We are here to try and win the Vuelta a España but with guys in the category of Valverde and Mancebo it is not easy. Both of them are equally dangerous. Valverde seems to be recovering from the fall, he is dangerous and very brave...Mancebo is also very dangerous." Heras doesn't think he has yet won the race. "The Vuelta is not over, there is still a great part of it in the mountains so we have to take it little by little...the hardest stage for me will be the time trial in Madrid so we will see what happens there, but it isn't that long and it doesn't have long flat straights. The mountain time trial is in my favour as should be the stage in Bejar, so we will see what happens. Cycling is not mathematics." All he could add was that, "From the start today the whole team worked incredibly hard and Isidro like all the team are great professionals." Today's stage headed out through Sergio Leone territory, and you could almost imaging the sounds of Ennio Morricone ringing in your head, past wild west towns especially built for the director's films, expecting to see Clint Eastwood appear on the horizon rather than witness one of the great climbing stages of this year's Vuelta. When you first enter the valley, with its stone and shale ruins, you slowly start to rise to the foot of the Alto de Alto de Velefique, and it was through here that the Liberty Seguros squad decided to turn on the pace and see who could stick around with them. The Velefique, a monster, was the first of three mountains that have never been climbed in the Vuelta before. Velefique and the two faces of the Calar Alto traversed today covered in excess of 60 kilometres. Each climb averaged over six percent but at times, the grades reached 16 percent. They are each monsters that rise out of the Andulacian desert to form the bulk of this particular Sierra and over each, the legs struggle to turn the pedals. Despite all of this within a fairly short 145 kilometre stage, one never expected to see the differences to emerge in the way they did. Roberto Heras soared to the summit of the northeast face of the Calar Alto to take the stage win. A couple of Saturday's back his team were a disaster in the opening team time trial, a discipline in which the squads of Manolo Saiz excel. That day they lost over just 28 kilometres 1'28 to the USPS team. It seems like an eternity ago but the losses have kept Roberto Heras a long way off the pace for the stages that followed. In 13 kilometres today, the tiny Roberto Heras got his own back and a lot more when he robbed Floyd Landis of his golden jersey by an astounding margin of 3'06. Landis, who has been the majority leader for the first half of the race now finds himself in 5th place 2'19 back. Maybe not a great surprise, but Floyd has been hanging in with the strongest. Maybe a surprise to Heras who inferred afterwards that today's stage went much better than the result that they had set themselves. "Our idea today was to try and lessen the gap to those above us on G.C. we weren't thinking about the stage or the lead, simply to lessen the differences, nothing more," he told Cyclingnews. Heras attacked the tiny group that survived the first 14 kilometres of the final climb and roared up the slopes solo never looking back, never slowing down and always increasing his advantage over those that tried to follow him. Out of the saddle for the majority of the time, his tiny body turned the pedals with what seemed like ease and calm, but equally with force. Heras maintained a stellar pace in his personal race to the top, only sitting down when the grade allowed it and no doubt he suffered, always at the limit, all of the way, to the finish buried in a hollow, fog bound, just below the astronomical observatory that gives this peak its man-made purpose. Paternina-Costa Almeria's Paco Lara was one of the day's brave but unsuccessful protagonists. Lara was one of a number who escaped the main bunch as the Velefique got under way, but he was the only one who continued with it, staying away on his own. He continued on alone, up and down the slopes of the Sierra until he was finally joined and immediately passed by the attacking Heras under the seven kilometre to go banner. Behind Lara, Felix Cardenas continued Cafes Baque's Plan Colombia picking up the second place mountain points on both the Velefique and the south face of Calar Alto. But Cardenas and those caught in between Lara and the bunch of race leader's were run down after the summit. Heras was of course one of the 40 strong group that was created with the merging of the Cardenas group and what was still then the Landis group. But if they arrived at the bottom of the final ascent in number, it was as soon as the climb got under way they started to shed riders. Some of them fought and fought to stay in contact, some of them even regained contact. But often enough they did so only to be shed again by the mighty pace set by Baranowski, Serrano and Nozal. That’s how the day panned out for most all the way from the coastal heat of Almeria and over the succession of climbs where the weather was found to be a good 12 or more degrees cooler. On the final climb Landis was the first of the leaders to crack. Valverde attacked to increase the gap to and damage as the American was left behind to suffer. After Liberty had set the almighty pace Heras took over and left all the others behind. He caught Lara and passed him and his gap increased all the way to the top. Valverde then himself cracked after fighting to stay with Mancebo. Then it was Mancebo's turn after he had caught Santi Perez, who had tried to chase Heras. Heras also told us that he was, "A little surprised by the attack of Valverde I didn't expect it...in the condition he is in just now it was pretty incredible." Tomorrow is one of the two remaining flat stages. Let's wait and see who survived today and might be around to contest the sprints tomorrow before we make any predictions.
