59th Vuelta a España - GTSpain, September 4-26, 2004Main Page Live coverage Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 10 - September 13: Alcoi - Xorret de Catí (Castalla-Alicante), 174.5 kmA Mountain named Jimenez - the Xorret shakes the fieldBy Martin Hardie in Xorret de Cati Comunidad Valenciana's Eladio Jimenez won the stage of La Vuelta to Xorret de Catì for the second time. In doing so continued the tradition commenced by the late Jose Maria "Chava" Jimenez who won here when La Vuelta first visited in 1998, and that Eladio continued when he won here in 2000. Thus it seems only riders by the name of Jimenez are victorious in Xorret de Cati. The race today was a bonus for all of us who watched - three races in one panned out during the day. The first race that got under way for the battle between the sprinters, Freire, Zabel and O'Grady, as each searched for the points along the way. With three metas volantes and the final on offer, the trio were out for a day long battle to garner whatever advantage they could in a competition that is hotting up as a battle royale between three of the best fast men around. The second race was the one for G.C. It took place well behind the sprinters' break, at times as far back as 14 minutes and even at the foot of the final 4 km wall the peloton lagged four kilometres behind along the road. This race saw Valverde and Heras gain some precious seconds on Landis, but not enough in the end to depose the American, who kept the gold jersey by just eight seconds. The third race was of course a personal one with only destiny and history the foes. That race saw Eladio Jimenez seeking to continue the tradition of maintaining as the name Jimenez as the synonym for Xorret de Catì. It is still a mountain called Jimenez. How it unfoldedJimenez started his quest early on in the day when he and Oscar Freire left the fold of the peloton after a mere 14 kilometres. As Freire took the first sprint points in Mariola, Zabel took third place back in the peloton. But the German veteran knew that if he wanted to really counter Freire's move and keep his hold on the points jersey he would have to bridge the gap. Over the coming stretch Zabel was joined by O'Grady, who obviously couldn't let the German get away with Freire. The pair along with José Miguel Elias (Relax-Bergasol), Juan Fuentes (Saeco) and Ruslan Ivanov (Alessio-Bianchi) caught Freire and Jimenez after 40 km. Steadily their advantage grew from 30 seconds to over 14'30 and only then started to fall as Liberty Seguros took control in the form of a marathon effort on the part of Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano. Igor pulled the Liberty train for a good 50 kilometres over the climbs of the Tibi and the Carrasqueta. His job was not to run down the breakaway, but to keep anybody who had an eye on their GC position struggling behind his teammate Nozal and captain Heras. On the final, evil ascent of the Xorret, Eladio Jimenez slipped away from his seven companions. Fuentes had tried to go first but was run down by a super O'Grady. The Aussie champ seems to be having the best season of his life and his crossing of the Xorret was a marvel to the eyes, if not complete pain to Stuey. All of the riders zig-zagged across the road during the steepest 20% sections - and they were repeated ramp after ramp. The rain and hail didn't help their cause and it seemed at times that although they were in their smallest gears that they could at any time just stop turning the pedals. Jimenez eventually got away and although Freire challenged for a little while he couldn't bridge and started to fall back to the others. Jimenez crowned the Alto solo through a wildly enthusiastic throng of spectators, and slipped out of the rain on one side onto the somewhat drier roads and the three tricky kilometres down and around to the finish line. Behind as his break away companions fell by the wayside, the only one with the stamina to challenge was Stuey, crossing the summit in second place to the amazement of onlookers. He scaled the wall and came down the other side to claim a second place that for a sprinter was as glorious as any win could be. As he reached his team helpers, his head and arms just collapsed onto his handlebars as his body shook from the effort. The points he gained at the finish were enough for him to bunny hop Zabel and he now holds a tight four point advantage in what is growing into one of the classic points duels we have seen. O'Grady was clearly in no condition to talk to anyone after his effort, but we did manage to speak to Jimenez shortly after he crossed the line. An ecstatic Jimenez told Cyclingnews that, "I thought it was almost impossible to win here again...my two wins have been completely different. Today I was in an escape from almost kilometre zero and I arrived here alone. It's pretty impossible to imagine that; it's a bit of dream really." The day's third race was really one between Liberty and the Valenciana boys. Although Landis held on to the golden jersey, for the last two days he has lost time to the climbers, Heras and to the all-round superhero Alejandro Valverde. How much longer Floyd can grit his teeth and hang on is not yet known, but if he can it will be a Herculean effort that deserves every ounce of praise. One thing is for certain, his efforts and his style are appreciated by all. His tenacity in the face of Heras and Valverde today was extraordinary. He hung in there and remains in gold by eight lonely seconds. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility to see Landis lose some time along the road to Madrid but still find himself within striking distance for the final race against the clock. With Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano having set the pace in the peloton for an eternity as the final climb neared the green Valencianan gang took over to launch Valverde up the wall. But first it was the turn again for one of La Vuelta's tiny young emerging gems to show his wares again - Paternina's Jorge Ferrio, who has been climbing well in Spain's week long races all year, took advantage of the situation to attempt a brave solo bid to clear the bigger names he accompanied. He did so and managed to remain clear all the way to the line of the power packed trio - Heras, Valverde and Piepoli - two of whom who obviously have their own battle to fight out during the coming eleven stages. As the climb really got under way, Valverde attacked strongly from the tiny remaining group and created a nice hole between himself and Heras who with Piepoli eventually regained his wheel - but now without a big effort. Another amazing effort by Nozal saw him nearly make to the three as well. But a content Valverde spoke to Cyclingnews as he stood near the podium watching the giant TV and the finish line to see how much time he had gained on Landis: "I gave it everything on the climb, Roberto stayed on my wheel and I just kept going I am really happy with the way things are going," he said. Valverde's team, excluded by the UCI Pro Tour, excluded from the Tour, is now setting itself up as being a real threat in La Vuelta. Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme gets people into the breaks, pulls the peloton when it matters and attacks at every opportune moment. It is going to be hard, but one thing is for sure it will not give in. Valverde gained valuable time on Landis today, not the 57 seconds he needed, but enough to set himself up to possibly be the next race leader. Tomorrow's uphill grind to Caravaca de la Cruz, although not a classified mountain finish, could well end up providing another opportunity for him to move closer to the lead. It suits him much more than it does a climber like Heras, but on the other hand the way the power sprinters are performing the finish may be another ongoing prime time chapter in the O'Grady-Zabel-Freire match up. Hamilton returned to have some form today and coming in with Landis was some orange light at the end of the tunnel in the form of Samuel Sanchez. The Euskadi boys have been having a tough time of late and today's effort by Sanchez deserves mention as it could hopefully be a signal of some significant form just around the corner. In terms of the road to Madrid and with a G.C. that has a top six of Landis, Valverde, Mancebo, Nozal, Heras and Beltran, spread out over a mere 59 seconds, the fireworks will continue for some time yet.
