Where have all the favourites gone?

Armstrong in control as Basso and Klöden step forward

The second phase of the Tour de France produced a number of surprises, but not the sort most people expected. As the first major climbs came, nearly all of the top favourites went...backwards or out of the race. Gone are Tyler Hamilton, Haimar Zubeldia, and Denis Menchov, among others. Meanwhile, Jan Ullrich failed to keep pace in the Pyrenees and dropped to nearly seven minutes behind the man to beat. Iban Mayo and his Euskaltel-Euskadi team imploded as the race hit the Pyrénées, practically home court for the Basques, and Spaniard Roberto Heras failed to reproduce his fierce climbing talent he showed on the same two mountain finishes two years ago.

Two 'new' faces emerged atop the leader board, one expected, one less so. Ivan Basso, GC leader for Team CSC, has thus far confirmed his potential as Italy's next great stage race rider. A former winner of the white jersey of best young rider, Basso has come into his own in the first mountains of this year's Tour and on the first two mountaintop finishes he was the only man capable of matching the pace of defending champion Lance Armstrong. Basso took a stage win and a second place, and set himself up to be Armstrong's closest challenger for the remainder of the race. T-Mobile's Andreas Klöden leapt ahead of his faltering leader Jan Ullrich and he too could carry on for a podium finish in Paris if he can maintain his form through the next set of mountains.

Armstrong isn't in yellow yet, but the American and his dominant US Postal Service team once again made the Tour their own, dispensing of their rivals systematically through perfect tactics and an unforgiving collective strength. After 14 stages, Armstrong sits just 22 seconds out of the race lead. Next stop: the Alps.

Stage 9 - July 13: St Leonard de Noblat - Guéret, 160.5 km

Robbie McEwen overcame pain and stiffness from the mass pile up in Angers (stage 6) to claim his second stage win of the Tour in Guéret. McEwen executed a perfectly timed sprint to beat Thor Hushovd and Stuart O'Grady. The stage should have ended with a day-long breakaway duo sprinting for top honours, but Iñigo Landaluze and Filippo Simeoni opted to look at each other rather than the peloton descending upon them in the closing metres. After nearly 120km in the lead, the duo saw their efforts come to naught as McEwen rocketed past with 60 metres to go.

"It was a fantastic victory for me today", effused a delighted McEwen post-stage. "With the injuries from my crash (in Angers last Friday), it's been hard. My knee's been hurting, my back hurts, my entire body is aching but in the sprint, I gave it all the energy I had in my body today to win."

McEwen held onto his green jersey while new French sensation Thomas Voeckler had no trouble keeping himself in yellow.

Stage 10 - July 14: Limoges - St Flour, 237 km

The longest stage of the Tour, and a potentially dangerous day, stage 10 from Limoges to Saint-Flour failed to produce the excitement expected as the peloton tackled 237 kilometres of endless undulations, culminating with a Cat. 1 climb of the Puy Mary and a long descent to Saint Flour. As the Tour dipped into the Massif Central, the roads were never flat and rarely straight. Welcome sunshine after a soggy first week also offered a first test in changing conditions, but the favourites were not about to test each other on the comparatively small climbs of the day.

Some were surprised by the difficulty of the early climbs, but nobody was surprised to see Richard Virenque take off on his first serious bid to regain his cherished polka dot jersey of best climber. Virenque ended up in a break with only Axel Merckx for company and the duo steadily built a lead of over ten minutes as the peloton was content to just survive the day. Merckx was showing terrific form in the hills, but ultimately had to watch in frustration as Virenque dropped him on the biggest climb of the day. For Merckx it was a deception, having discussed with Virenque a plan to work together to the finish while letting the Frenchman collect the mountain points. Virenque countered that he merely kept his tempo and Merckx was unable to follow.

Whatever the reason, Virenque arrived in Saint-Flour alone for a triumphant win on Bastille Day, France's national day of independence. He donned his jersey as planned, while behind the favourites stayed together and Voeckler remained comfortably in yellow.

Stage 11 - July 15: St Flour - Figeac, 164 km

As the Tour exited the Massif Central, local rider David Moncoutié claimed the stage win he'd been dreaming of throughout his professional career. Moncoutié inserted himself in a breakaway with Juan Antonio Flecha and Egoi Martinez in the relatively short jaunt from Saint-Flour to Figeac. The constant twists and turns, along with some short but difficult climbs, favoured the break. Voeckler's Brioches La Boulangère team collaborated with US Postal Service to keep the advantage in check, but the top GC standings were under no threat and the trio was clear to contest the finish.

"It's true that I knew the parcours a little bit today," Moncoutié explained after putting in the decisive attack with under 10km to race. "I knew that if I got away on the false flat (on the final ascent) with 0'30 lead I could stay away because the descent was twisty. I was a little nervous about being in a break with two Spanish riders, but I had great legs today and I was really motivated to win. Without a doubt, this is my best win ever!"

The first major mountains lay ahead in the next stage, and at the end of stage 11, Jan Ullrich remained confident. The 1997 Tour winner had kept himself well hidden in the first week of the Tour, but the moment of truth lay just around the bend.

"I like the sun and heat and blue skies for racing," an optimistic Ullrich said after Stage 11. "I'm feeling good and I think in the next few days, everything will go well for me at the Tour. Today my teammate Andreas Klöden attacked and US Postal saw that and had to work hard today to bring him back. Now I'm waiting for the big mountains and the right moment to attack."

Little did Ullrich know how quickly his fortune would change.

The foreshadowing of the dark skies and rain clouds waiting for the peloton at the foot of the Pyrénées was almost too obvious. On the first big day of climbing in the Tour, the race would see the opening glimpses of who was in condition to challenge for the overall victory in Paris. Lance Armstrong and US Postal Service had already taken victory in the team time trial, but some doubts still existed about the team's strength in the mountains. These doubts were unfounded.

As Michael "Chicken" Rasmussen flew away on a counter move following several attacks on the first of two climbs, the Col d'Aspin. The Dane from Rabobank was the first to hit the slopes of the Col du Tourmalet on the way to finish along the climb at the ski station of La Mongie. It was a good effort by Rasmussen, but he stood little chance of holding off the big favourites as they began their ascent.

US Postal's José Luis Rubiera and José Azevedo set the perfect tempo on the final climb, but were still attacked by Team CSC's Carlos Sastre. The Spaniard, a stage winner in last year's Tour, gained some time on the leaders but didn't have the legs to go the distance. With 4km to the finish, Francisco Mancebo tried to catch Sastre, but succeeded only in sparking the decisive duel between Ivan Basso and Lance Armstrong. Basso climbed impressively and kept Armstrong at his limit as the duo moved ahead of the remaining favourites. Basso won the stage while Armstrong moved himself closer to the race lead.

"It was a fantastic day today for me," Basso commented. "I'm really happy... It was a good start for me, but it's still the beginning of the Tour and there it's still really hard and really long. Armstrong is very strong and so we'll have to see what happens. I have good form right now and I'm hoping to keep it."

The damage behind was impressive. Tyler Hamilton, suffering from his week one crash, found no power in his legs and had severe back pain to contend with. The Phonak leader dropped nearly three and a half minutes to Armstrong and Basso and after just one day in the mountains it was clear who the two strongest men were. Ullrich didn't completely self destruct, but 2'30 lost to Armstrong was two minutes too many on the very first day of climbing. T-Mobile's man of the day was German national champion Klöden, who finished third on the stage, just 0'20 behind the lead duo. Thomas Voeckler survived the first day in the Pyrénées, a sign of his strength and character to hold on to his race lead as the heaviest of hitters came forward.

Stage 13 - July 17: Lannemezan - Plateau de Beille, 205.5 km

Ivan Basso had his day of glory when he took the first mountain victory in the Tour, but the next day would belong to Armstrong as he and Basso repeated their domination of the field on the tough climb to Plateau de Beille. If Basso looked stronger on the road to La Mongie, Armstrong was back in control in stage 13, taking the stage win and feeling quite satisfied after US Postal squarely stamped its authority on the race throughout the day. As exciting as Armstrong's victory was the heroic ride of Voeckler, who seemed destined to lose his jersey to the American but in fact dug deep and hung on by just 22 seconds.

"It's important because of the time bonuses; twenty seconds is twenty seconds," Armstrong said of his victory. "It's good to have it and it's also nice to win a stage of the Tour. People win a stage of the Tour and it makes the entire year. I can't forget that and I won't forget it. It would have been nice to be back in yellow. It was sort of our intention before the day started."

Voeckler was exhausted, but excited to have hung on, crediting his team for his success.

"Not many people thought I would be able to keep the maillot jaune today, and not even me in some ways," he said. "It was really hard today, I was hurting all day and all my teammates, especially Jérôme (Pineau) and Sylvain (Chavanel) gave me a lot of encouragement all during the stage. Plus all along the stage, all the people were encouraging me... Today, I did it on guts alone."

Ullrich lost even more time to Armstrong, while the big shock was the abandon of Tyler Hamilton, unable to carry on with his injured back. It was a cruel blow to Hamilton, who said he "had the team and had the legs" but was unable to get the necessary power in the climbs. Phonak lost its leader and Hamilton lost his first true chance to ride for the Tour victory.

Hamilton's compatriot Bobby Julich also found misfortune, crashing while fetching bottles from his team car. Julich was able to carry on but lose more than 40 minutes and seriously injured his wrist. The resurgent Julich was excited after a strong performance the day before when his teammate Basso claimed victory, yet a day later was distraught knowing that his chances for a top 10 or top 15 place in Paris, not to mention his valuable role in CSC's defense of the team classification, were all but gone.

Iban Mayo also floundered, coming close to dropping out only to carry on after encouragement from his team director and teammates. Despite the sea of orange-clad Basque fans waiting frantically on the final climb, Mayo couldn't salvage his Tour with a display of climbing prowess.

Stage 14 - July 18: Carcassonne - Nîmes, 192.5 km

A generally uneventful day of transition from the Pyrénées to the Tour's second rest day in Nîmes, stage 14 saw a break go clear after a grueling 100km of attack and counter attack. Once the move detached itself, with no threats present for the general classification, the peloton breathed a sigh of relief and eased up, content to ride more for the prospect of a day off than another fight at the finish.

Spain's Aitor Gonzalez, winner of the 2002 Vuelta a España, salvaged his own season with a classy solo escape in the closing kilometres of the generally flat stage. Gonzalez became the 100th Spanish rider to win a road stage in the Tour, and was clearly pleased with his accomplishment.

"I had to find the right moment to attack the break; that was the problem," he said. "But I was able to get away and win so I'm very happy."

Robbie McEwen took the field sprint for 11th place, more than 14 minutes behind Gonzalez. The Aussie sprinter held onto his green points jersey into the second rest day, 13 points ahead of German veteran Erik Zabel. Voeckler breathed a sigh of relief, very much in need of a rest day after a long defense of his yellow jersey through wind, rain, and mountains.

Next up for the Tour is a heavy final week, including the highly anticipated time trial on l'Alpe d'Huez Wednesday. The showdown between Lance Armstrong and Jan Ullrich may be generally moot, but Ivan Basso has not said his final word in this year's Tour, nor has Andreas Klöden. Outside the top five, ten riders are within roughly five minutes of each other in the classification, meaning there is plenty of racing yet to come.
