Reid rules supreme

Kiwi Olympian Robin Reid ruined the party for the Southland Times and Rabobank teams at the finish of the afternoon stage of the PowerNet Tour of Southland.
In a sprint finish at Invercargill at the end of the tough 127km stage from Riversdale, the diminutive Reid burst through in the gale force cross winds to beat Heath Blackgrove, Glen Mitchell and the early lead out man Peter Latham.
The stage looked set to produce some drama when an early break of Hayden Roulston, Fraser McMaster and Glen Mitchell rode away almost from the start.
Mitchell later said that he only joined the break to defend to defend the lead of his team-mate John Lieswyn but his tactics looked questionable when the break was out to 1 minute 56 secs and Mitchell found himself the leader on the road by 1 minute 12 secs.
Despite pleadings from Roulston to join in the attack Mitchell, in contact with his team by radio refused. "I was just marking it for the team. If those two wanted to pull me out and take a couple of minutes then I was more than happy to sit on, that was the race, that was the tactics," Mitchell said.

Those tactics undoubtedly cost Mitchell personally the yellow jersey and probably the win in the stage.
Tomorrow the riders line up for the grueling 164km ride from Winton to the scenic lakeside town Te Anau and the Southland Times team should strengthen their cast iron grip on the race.
