Southland Times show their cards on Bluff Hill

A strong ride up the Bluff Hill at the end of the afternoon stage has given Glen Mitchell the overall lead at the end of day one of the PowerNet Tour of Southland today.
The USA-based Kiwi pro, who finished sixth in the Australian Sun Tour, beat New Zealand road champion Heath Blackgrove by three seconds on the stage with Aucklander Aaron Strong third and Mitchell's Southland Times team-mates John Lieswyn (USA) fourth and Scott Guyton fifth.
A four-man break that included Gordon McCauley (Zookeepers Café), Bill Stolte (USA, Hilo), Ross Simmons (Rabobank) and Fabian Mathes (Germany, Team Ultimo) disintegrated on the climb, leaving the big guns to fight out the finish.
Mitchell, who has a point to prove back home after missing Olympic selection earlier this year, is happy with his overall lead of 15 seconds over Blackgrove and says that it puts his team in a strong position. "If I'm in the bunch and any of those guys (Southland Times team) gets into a break group, well, that's still good for us," he said.
Mitchell sees his friendship with team-mate Scott Guyton, last year's winner, as a strong plus. "The good thing about racing with Scott is that I've raced with him for most of my career and whoever gets the right move or is feeling better, well, the other is always willing to help. That's what makes it such a pleasure to come home and ride the tour, because everybody in this team is willing to help and to do what is needed."
Tomorrow (Tuesday), the riders face a tough day with two stages: a 113.8km ride from Invercargill to Tuatapere and a 88.3km ride to Winton.
