American takes second Southland title

American cyclist John Lieswyn has ridden the Tour of Southland three times for two wins and in anybody's language, two out of three ain't bad.
Riding the PowerNet-sponsored race as a member of the strong Southland times team with Kiwis Glen Mitchell (Hamilton), Scott Guyton (Rotorua), Tim Gudsell (Te Awamutu) and Greg Henderson (Dunedin), the visitor took over the yellow jersey from Mitchell on Tuesday and held it throughout the week.
There were rumours through the race that Lieswyn's popularity in the team camp was not high and that there was a rift between him and the Waikato rider Mitchell, but after the race Lieswyn dispelled them.
"I've been a friend of Glen's for a long time and he invited me down here. Like any friendship, it's had its ups and downs and this week was a test of it, for sure," said Lieswyn. "I think our riding over the last three days showed that we worked well together to get the stage wins."

Even so, this morning on the stage from Te Anau to Lumsden, Mitchell threw down the gauntlet when he rode clear of the ten-man leading bunch three kilometres from the finish to reduce the gap between himself and Lieswyn from 38 to 16 seconds, the stage was won by Aucklander Gordon McCauley.
Mitchell contributed much to the team's win in the race classification with two mountain stage wins, while Greg Henderson also won two stages including today's stage to Invercargill.
McCauley, who only came into the Tour as a replacement for an injured rider in the Zookeepers team, went home with two stage wins and the King of the Mountains Jersey. If there was a prize for the most aggressive rider, McCauley would have shared that with team-mate Heath Blackgrove. The national road champion lost his chance for the big prize when he struck mechanical problems on Tuesday, but from then on he looked to pick up stage and sprint prizes.

Perhaps the "find" of the Tour was Te Awamutu rider Peter Latham, who won the time trial stage on Wednesday and took the overall under 23 title.
American Curtis Gunn rode aggressively throughout the week to take, re-take and then defend the Harcourts Sprint Ace jersey. With more than 15 sprints on some stages, this classification is often a battle to the final stage. On the morning of the final day, Gunn held a narrow lead of 6 points over McCauley and 7 over Godfrey, and with more than a dozen sprints between the two final day's stages, everyone knew it would be battle down to the last metre. Gunn stepped up to the challenge, made the winning moves in each stage and actually increased his lead to be the first American to take the sprinter's jersey.
