Stage 8 - November 5: Winton - Te Anau, 163.6km
World champion takes stage

World track scratch race champion Greg Henderson won the longest stage of the PowerNet Tour of Southland, the 163km ride from Winton to the tourist town of Te Anau today.
Henderson was one of a four man break that formed after only eight kilometres and after a radio discussion with his Southland Times team manager he adopted the role of "Sheriff" on the back of the group and stayed there until the finish.
Hayden Godfrey (Winton Middle Pub) dropped off the back of the break group on the long Blackmount hill climb 54km from the finish leaving Heath Blackgrove (Zookeepers) and American Matt Dubberley to share the workload.
The break had actually gone out to nearly eight minutes at around the half way mark making Dubberley the tour leader on the road. "It was a good feeling but you kind of know that it's kind of temporary unless Southland Times lay down and give it to me," Dubberley said.

Blackgrove rode the last few kilometres with a broken rear hub and could only manage third place. Henderson had no difficulty in taking the stage and he made no apologies for doing so. "Earlier in the break I felt a bit guilty but obviously I was just following orders and well, that's bike racing" He said. On the stage win he said, "It's been done to me before. I've done it to other people and other people have done it to me."
Dubberley also wasn't surprised at the result. " I kind of worked out early that I was riding for second place," he said.
Hayden Roulston led the chasing bunch home with the big guns of the Southland Times team in close attendance so the stage made little difference to the general classification placings.
The stage saw two riders withdraw through injury. Australian Chris Carson crashed with young Kiwi trackie Mathew Haydock and they are both out of the Tour. Neither rider is seriously hurt.

The final two stages on Saturday take the riders back to Invercargill where the tour will finish mid afternoon.
