52nd FBD Milk Rás - 2.5Ireland, May 23-30, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - May 29: Carrick-on-Suir - Tullow, 149 kmMcCann seizes yellow with dramatic stage winBy Shane Stokes, Irishcycling.com The final showdown. With nine categorised climbs awaiting the riders and Ireland's David O'Loughlin and David McCann just 3 and 23 seconds respectively off the yellow jersey, today's penultimate stage of the FBD Milk Rás was set to be an absolute humdinger of a race. And so it proved. At the end of the 149 kilometre leg to Tullow, McCann raced up to the line to take the stage, the yellow jersey and what is an almost certain overall victory in the 2.5 ranked event. McCann finished 27 seconds clear of Anthony Malarczyk (Wales - Stena Line) and third-placed Dermot Nally (Galway), with Kimmo Kananen (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) and Kevin Dawson (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) next home, 36 seconds down. Malcolm Elliott led in a big chasing group for sixth place, the yellow jersey of Bonca finishing with these riders and losing 59 seconds, plus the race lead, in the process. With just tomorrow's one hour Phoenix Park circuit race remaining, today represented McCann's final chance to chase victory. His Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team-mate O'Loughlin was close enough to Bonca to - theoretically - challenge for the final yellow jersey if today's stage proved indecisive, but the business really had to be done before Tullow. As things stand this evening McCann will, barring accident or misfortune, win his first ever FBD Milk Rás tomorrow afternoon. He is a comfortable 36 seconds clear of Bonca, 39 ahead of O'Loughlin and 1'03 up on Nally. As expected, the new race leader was delighted with what is now an almost certain victory in Ireland's premier cycling event. "Today worked out very well for the team," he beamed. "Nothing is guaranteed but with just tomorrow's short stage it is looking good. I have 36 seconds in hand and the final stage usually ends with a bunch sprint. It isn't over till it is over, but I'm very happy with the way things are." How it unfoldedFollowing the start in Carrick on Suir, a number of attacks containing Ireland - Thornton's team members were fired off. The aim was to put pressure on Bonca's team right from the start in the hope that they would crack later on in the stage. Shortly after the riders left Carrick, Glenn Bak (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) opened up a ten second lead. Denis Lynch (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) and two others then jumped across, only for the Slovenian Perutnina Ptuj team to close it all down. Bak was at it again a few minutes later, going up the road with three other riders. These were Tommy Evans (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling), Kevin Dawson (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) and Mark Cassidy (Meath Lee Strand). The four leaders build a lead of sixteen seconds over the main field. A number of other riders saw the chance to get clear and tried to bridge the gap, but without success. The last to try was Valeriy Dmitryev (Kazakhstan), who did manage to get across, but shortly afterwards the whole break was hauled back. Several small attacks followed before the Slovenian team decided to shut things down by riding tempo on the front of the bunch. This suited the challengers just fine and a stalemate of sorts transpired until the start of the first category ascent of The Heights. At the bottom of the climb mountains leader Tobias Lergård (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) attacked in pursuit of more points towards that classification. He maintained a small gap over the top of that climb and then onto the Corrabutt, the second of three consecutive cat. one mountains. Behind, McCann and Bonca forged clear of the fragmenting peloton, cresting the summit just behind Lergård and slightly ahead of O'Loughlin and Nally. A small regrouping happened on the false flat between the top of the Corrabutt and the start of Mount Leinster. O'Loughlin continued the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling assault when he kicked clear and opened up a 22 second lead. However his legs had lost a little of their zing after the previous day's marathon breakaway. He crested the top clear of the others but Bonca - with McCann in tow - was in hot pursuit. Once over the top the three came together, with Nally and Lergård next across and then some other riders. McCann seized his chance on the descent, accelerating clear while O'Loughlin blocked Bonca's immediate pursuit. McCann has been descending well all week and by the 107 kilometre point, his kamikaze effort had him twenty seconds clear. Bonca's team-mates were still trying to get back on terms after being dropped on the climbs and without their assistance, the jersey was losing time fast. At the 118 kilometre point McCann was clear leader on the road, 51 seconds ahead of Kimmo Kananen and Glenn Bak of the Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic team and 1'12 up on Bonca. The race leader's dilemma was that if he went to the front of the group and chased McCann, he would leave himself vulnerable to attacks. To underline this point, O'Loughlin briefly went clear, compounding Bonca's worries. However his teammates managed to rejoin the front group and went straight to the head of the line of riders, bringing McCann well within sight by Bunclody. With twenty kilometres to go his advantage was just 21 seconds, making things look very precarious indeed. Conscious that a pursuit race against several Slovenians was only going to go one way, the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling riders started attacking the group to try to isolate Bonca once more. While each of their accelerations ate into McCann's lead, the gamble was that he had enough of a buffer to be able to sustain his lead. With ten kilometres to go he was still just 26 seconds ahead. However, the big efforts by Evans and Lynch had broken the resolve of the Slovenian riders and from this point the gap started to go right back out again. With eight kilometres to go team manager Frank Campbell got on the radio to David O'Loughlin, telling him that all their hopes now rested with McCann. "It was very hard to have to tell David that his chance had gone, but the way things turned out it was important for him to mark Bonca," he said after the stage. And while it was very difficult for O'Loughlin to give up on his dream of winning the 2004 FBD Milk Rás, he played the model teammate and sat on Bonca, refusing to help in the face of repeated attacks by other riders. This cracked the yellow jersey, who at that point realised that the game was up. Inside the final ten kilometres Nally and Malarczyk were 20 seconds back from McCann and doing their utmost to get across. But the former national time trial champion was on an incredible ride and would not be brought back, roaring into the streets of Tullow and hitting the line 27 seconds clear of Malarczyk and third-placed Nally. Kananen and Kevin Dawson (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) finished 36 seconds down, while Malcolm Elliott led home the big chasing group for sixth place. Paídi O'Brien (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) was eighth, one place ahead of O'Loughlin, with Bonca sixteenth. Crucially, though, this group was 59 seconds behind the McCann; more than enough to see the Ireland rider take over the leader's yellow jersey. Barring disaster in the final one hour circuit race, the 2004 FBD Milk Rás would be his. McCann was quick to praise his teammates. "They all did a fantastic job today. With myself and David (O'Loughlin) up there overall the goal was to attack and to try to get some time on Bonca. It was difficult for him as he was so close to the yellow jersey and ended up having to sacrifice his chances. But he played a very good team role, as did the other guys, and it all worked out in the end. "I attacked on the big climbs and when Bonca brought me back David went for it and opened up a good gap on Mount Leinster. I followed Bonca and could see it took him quite a bit of time to get up to David, so I knew he wasn't as sharp as he had been earlier in the race. As soon as David was brought back I attacked hard on the descent and got a gap. There were narrow, bumpy roads and as I have been descending well all week, I took a few risks on the corners and built a good lead. "I was a bit worried at Bunclody because they closed to within about twenty seconds of me. I knew that with the jumping around behind they'd be quicker than me on the hills but was pretty confident that on the flat and the descents I could pull away again. The guys on the team attacked Bonca and were able to isolate him from his team-mates, which was a big help. At the end the gap was very big and I was able to take the jersey by a good margin." McCann's team-mate David O'Loughlin started the day just three seconds behind Bonca in second place, but sacrificed his dream of a FBD Milk Rás win for the good of the team. "David did a very good job today, even though it would have been hard for him to have to sit back and let go of his chance to take yellow. We have all been playing a very good team role all week and this yellow jersey is due to that. Either of us could have taken it today. The whole team rode very well this week, it was a great effort." O'Loughlin went straight over to McCann after the finish and congratulated him on what is now an almost-certain FBD Milk Rás win. However it was clear from his body language that he was disappointed at losing out on his chance to win the race. "It's hard to be so close to yellow, but the important thing was for one of the team to win," he said philosophically. "I hope to come back again and win the race some other time." "It was very hard for David, but he did a great team ride today," said team manager Frank Campbell. "Either of the two (O'Loughlin or McCann) could have taken yellow, it could have gone either way. The goal was to try to get McCann up the road early on as he had more time to take back; David had just three seconds so he could have nipped away closer to the finish for that. "Once McCann got his gap it was important to isolate Bonca. We saw on the road to Cahirciveen that he wasn't very comfortable without his team-mates, so near the end the team were attacking hard in order to get rid of them again. McCann wasn't going to be able to hold off a big chase group by himself but if we broke it up a bit, he had a much better chance. "It was hard to have to tell David (O'Loughlin) with eight kilometres to go that it (his chance of taking yellow) was gone. At that stage it was all about letting McCann have his chance. David sat back a bit and while Bonca was looking for him to see if he would react when the attacks were going, he held back. It is hard for him today but he can come back and win this race again. He did very well this week and it should be good for his confidence and his career. Campbell's riders have had a superb week, taking three stage wins in all, the best international team award overall and also the stage award in that classification on five occasions. Barring disaster, McCann and O'Loughlin look set to take first and third overall, with Lynch in sixth and Evans eleventh. McCann is currently leading the points classification while O'Loughlin is set to finish second in the mountains competition. That theirs has been an excellent team performance is all the more notable as McCann and O'Loughlin are currently both aiming for Olympic selection. Two places are up for grabs and with Mark Scanlon looking almost certain to land one of these, the pressure is on for riders such as McCann, O'Loughlin, Lynch and US-based professional Ciarán Power to secure their passage to Athens. That the Irish team was able to work as such as tight unit this week is a tribute to the riders and team officials alike. Tomorrow's final stage of the FBD Milk Rás takes place in Dublin's Phoenix Park, the riders due to slug it out in a circuit race of just over an hour in duration. Little change is expected overall, but McCann and co. will still have to be vigilant and stay out of trouble. There is sure to be a ferocious battle for the stage win, with attacks and counter attacks enlivening the FBD Milk Rás right until the drop of the flag.
