52nd FBD Milk Rás - 2.5Ireland, May 23-30, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 8 - May 30: Phoenix Park Circuit, 40 kmStage win for Elliott, Overall for McCannBy Shane Stokes, Irishcycling.com The battle went to former top sprint ace Malcolm Elliott, but the war to David McCann. Today, as the Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn galloper raced to a fine win in the Phoenix Park, McCann finished safely in the main bunch to make sure of his first ever win in the FBD Milk Rás. McCann had started the stage with a comfortable margin of 36 seconds over the Slovenian professional Valter Bonca and, with the day's action confined to a circuit race in Dublin's Phoenix Park, it was likely that there would be no change to the overall standings. However that depended on McCann keeping tabs on Bonca and also avoiding crashes or last minute mechanical problems; happily for him, neither was an issue and he crossed the line in ninth to win the race overall. Bonca was second in the general classification while McCann's teammate David O'Loughin was a further three seconds back in third. "I'm speechless...I'm absolutely chuffed," McCann said after the prize presentation. "The FBD Milk Rás was the big goal of my season, even more so than the Olympics. If someone asked me if I'd rather win the FBD Milk Rás or go to Athens, I'd pick the first of those in an instant. I was second in the race in 1996 and it was on my list of races to win. I've ticked that off now, and it feels great." The elated 31 year old was quick to praise his team. "A lot of this is down to the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team and how well we worked together," he said. "We raced hard all week to get the jersey, with David O'Loughlin giving up his chance to win overall yesterday to make sure I got the race lead. Today each of the riders were at the front, keeping things together and bringing back any dangerous breakaways. We had to stay out of trouble and make sure Bonca didn't get any time, and were able to do both." "I'm overjoyed, I'm happier than I've been in a long time," said team manager Frankie Campbell after the race. "I worked with some of the riders on the team at the Tour of Langkawi at the start of the year and knew they could do something big in the FBD Milk Rás. I came in with the belief that if I treated them like professionals, they'd ride like professionals and that is exactly what happened." The control exerted by the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team set the scene for a big bunch gallop. After finishing second on this stage last year and needing to win to enhance his chances of taking the green jersey as best sprinter, Elliott cannoned off the front of the bunch and took his second stage of the week. Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic's Kimmo Kananen was next, ahead of Dublin Usher's Paul Healion, Mark Cavendish (Great Britain Under 23), Colm Bracken (Galway) and Aidan Crowley (Meath Lee Strand). Matej Stare (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj) was seventh, with Paídi O'Brien (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) eighth and McCann ninth. Elliott was delighted to get the win and so secure his green jersey, although he, Healion and several other riders ran into the back of an impeded commissaire's car just past the line. Fortunately no-one was badly hurt. In terms of the overall classifications, McCann took the 2004 title by 36 seconds over Bonca and 39 over O'Loughlin. Fellow Ireland - Thornton's Recycling riders Denis Lynch and Tommy Evans were sixth and eleventh overall, with the team taking the best international team award. They also landed the best international team stage prize today, adding to their five previous victories in that competition this week. How it unfoldedHard to believe, considering the unpredictable Irish climate, but the final stage brought the first rainfall of this year's FBD Milk Rás. Several splattering showers causing the large crowd to take cover under trees or beneath umbrellas; quite a change from the warm, bright sunshine seen for much of the week. Things brightened up for the end, though, with the last few laps of the flat, triangular circuit and the prize presentation being run off in bright light. Ireland - Thornton's Recycling David McCann started this final stage in yellow after an excellent solo win 24 hours earlier into Tullow. Besides McCann's considerable horsepower, a great team ride by the Ireland squad was responsible for the success. Their collective effort finally cracked race leader Valter Bonca and his Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj team, which came agonisingly close to winning the race. Had he done so, Bonca would have been only the third rider to lead the FBD Milk Ras from start to finish. The feat was first achieved by the great Se O'Hanlon in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Russian rider Alexander Gysiatnikov was the last to do so, way back in 1970. One of those who played the biggest part in dethroning Bonca was McCann's teammate David O'Loughlin, who selflessly sacrificed his chances on the final run-in to Tullow. O'Loughlin had a fantastic race and was certainly strong enough to win overall. He just missed taking yellow by three seconds on Friday; had he done so, yesterday's stage would have been very different. Needing to set a steady pace to dissuade attacks and to keep the chance of crashes to a minimum, the Irish team rode at the front for almost the entirety of the final 37 mile stage. There were a number of short-lived attacks, including several by Wicklow team riders but few got any real distance. Most of the gaps came from riders gaining slightly as they fought it out for the four Cycleways primes during the race. The first of these went to Meath Lee Strand's Aidan Crowley ahead of his teammate Mark Cassidy, the two coincidentally riding this season as part of the Cycleways - Lee Strand team. The second prime came several laps later and went to Michael Schweizer (Germany ComNet Senges), just ahead of Dublin Usher's Paul Healion. Like Crowley and Cassidy in the previous sprint, the two opened up a slight lead over the main bunch but the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team wasted little time in closing things down again. Mark Cassidy's father Phil took the third sprint, jumping away going onto the finish straight and hitting the line about a second clear. Cassidy won the FBD Milk Rás in 1983 and 1999 but at 42 years of age, had limited his ambitions to a stage win this time. Following the fourth prime - won by Daniel Lynch (Cork Kanturk Credit Union), brother of Ireland's Denis Lynch - Cassidy made his big bid for that stage, racing clear with Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic' s Mikael Segarsall. The two opened up a considerable lead of ten seconds but with green jersey contender Dermot Nally (Galway) and several others trying to close things down for the bunch gallop, they were back in the bunch with two laps to go. The Great Britain Under 23 team led the bunch through for the bell, hoping to set one of their riders up for the win. Inside the final 200 metres GB's Mark Cavendish was right up there, but Elliott was quickest, taking the honours just ahead of Kimmo Kananen (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Paul Healion and Cavendish and so sealing victory in the points competition. Second last year in the Phoenix Park, Elliott was delighted to take his second win of the week although he, Healion and several other riders ran into the back of an impeded commissaire's car just past the line. Fortunately no-one was badly hurt. There was also a crash in the bunch with about 200 metres to go; again, there were no serious casualties. McCann, though, avoided both spills and crossed the line safely to win the 2004 FBD Milk Ras. It was a great ride by the former double national champion and the whole Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team, their strength in numbers finally overhauling Bonca after a tough week of racing. The Slovenian had been confident of holding yellow to the end after winning the first stage, but starting the race one teammate down due to injury made the defence of his yellow jersey all the more difficult. Bonca rode very strongly throughout the race, but in the end had to be content with one stage win and second overall. Incidentally, he is due to ride the Race Across America in mid June; an even bigger test of endurance and determination for the 36 year old. So, in terms of the overall classifications, the 2004 FBD Milk Rás title went to McCann. Eight years after he finished as runner-up to Tommy Evans, the Belfastman finally took the title by 36 seconds over Bonca and 39 over O'Loughlin. Fellow Ireland - Thornton's Recycling riders Denis Lynch and Tommy Evans were sixth and eleventh overall, with the team taking the best international team award. They also landed the best international team stage prize today, adding to their five previous victories in that competition this week. Paul Healion was the Cuculann Crystal best county rider on the stage with Nally taking that distinction overall. He was a fine fourth in the general classification. Kerry was the best county team overall, ahead of Cork Kanturk Credit Union and Galway, with the latter taking the stage honours today. The points classification went right down to the wire, Elliott's stage win enough to give him a narrow two point victory over McCann. Nally was third, fifteen points further back. The best climber in the race was Tobias Lergård, (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), the Swede beating O'Loughlin and Bonca in the mountains category. Stefan Cohnen (Germany ComNet Senges) came out best in the under 23 standings, with Irish competitors Paídi O'Brien (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) and Sean Lacey (Kerry) showing promise in finishing fifth and sixth overall. Lacey led the classification for one day during the week, a fine achievement for a domestic-based rider. Donal Byrne (Dublin Orwell Shopping Centre) also rode well to take the best second category rider award, finishing well clear of Daire McCaughley (Dublin Wheelers All Systems) and Noel McGlynn (Dublin Exel Ravens). And so ends the 2004 FBD Milk Rás. It has been an excellent race, with the route, the riders, the weather, the drama and the action all making for a great spectacle.
