52nd FBD Milk Rás - 2.5Ireland, May 23-30, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - May 27: Cahirciveen - Millstreet, 152 kmElliott turns back timeBy Shane Stokes, Irishcycling.com Blast from the past. Former Tour of Spain points jersey winner Malcolm Elliott today turned back the clock in winning stage five of the FBD Milk Rás, proving quickest in the uphill drag to the finish line in Millstreet. The 42 year old Team Murphy and Gunn rider just held off Brian Ahern (Dublin Orwell - Dundrum Shopping Centre) and Kerry's Paul Griffin in the bunch sprint which ended the 152 kilometre stage, with all the main contenders finishing in the same time Besides Ahern and Griffin, three other Irish riders made the top ten. Tommy Evans (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) was seventh, while Adrian Hedderman (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) and Aidan Crowley (Meath Lee Strand) were ninth and tenth. Elliott is well known to those in cycling from his days competing against Kelly and Roche in the Nissan Classic. He won several stages and wore the yellow jersey in the race and was regarded as one of the fastest finishers in cycling. He clearly has retained some of that speed, despite his veteran status. "The finish here suited me well,' said Elliott. "I was in a good position before the sprint and once I saw the line ahead of me I had a strong feeling I wasn't going to be beaten.' Elliott and Griffin had been part of a group riders who came down in a crash with 40 kilometres remaining. Together with Ireland - Thornton's Recycling race favourite David O'Loughlin they picked themselves up, dusted themselves down and regained contact with the main field. Fortunately none of the three suffered serious injury and so will be able to start tomorrow. Despite plenty of action during the stage, the top ten in the general classification remain unchanged this evening as all the overall contenders finished in the same bunch. Valter Bonca (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj) continues to lead overall by six seconds from Petter Renäng (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) with O'Loughlin in third. Along with teammates David McCann (fourth) and fifth-placed Denis Lynch the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling riders are perfectly poised to attack Bonca over the final three stages of the eight-day event. O'Loughlin and Lynch did just that today, the former going clear in the early stages and then Lynch showing his hand inside the final hour of racing. The Kanturk rider looked set for a perfect Cork homecoming on the streets of Millstreet when, along with Kevin Dawson (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) and Huw Pritchard (Wales Stena Line) he broke away and built a 54 second lead. Lynch was just 46 seconds off yellow going into today's stage and became race leader on the road, but a furious chase mounted by Bonca's Slovenian team and the Kazakhstan national team saw all three riders hauled in before the stage end. Dawson was the last to succumb, being mopped up with about four kilometres remaining and so setting the scene for that big bunch finish. O'Loughlin finished in the midst of the pack and seemed happy enough with his ride. "I had a go early on but it didn't work out as there were just two of us and the bunch was riding hard behind. I sat up in the hope that some riders would come across to me but that didn't happen.' "I came down in that crash near the end but was lucky not to be badly hurt. I've got some cuts and bruises but am otherwise okay. I was about five riders back in the lineout just before it happened; one rider cut in on David McCann, clipping a wheel behind and causing a few of us to hit the ground. Luckily I was okay." How it unfoldedAs expected, today's stage of the FBD Milk Rás saw a number of big attacks and a difficult time for the Slovenian team of race leader Bonca. After an early move containing Lynch and six other riders was reeled in, double FBD Milk Rás winner Philip Cassidy attacked going through Waterville, 15 kilometres into the stage. Shortly afterwards, O'Loughlin and Julian Winn (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) raced clear of the main field and passed Cassidy, the duo opening up a big lead over the Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj-led peloton. Crossing the summit of the difficult first category climb, O'Loughlin and Winn were over a minute clear of the main field, making the Irishman race leader on the road. They persisted with the attack for some time but when it became clear that the lead wouldn't grow any further, O'Loughlin sat up in the hope that reinforcements would come across from the bunch. This failed to happen and O'Loughlin was reeled in by the main field, while Winn persisted until his recapture at Sneem. Next to try were the Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic duo of Kimmo Kananen and Tobias Lergĺrd. Lergĺrd was tenth overall and in leading the King of the Mountains classification, had two good reasons to ride. He dropped Kananen before Inchee Mountain (98.4 kilometres) but took maximum points at the top of the category one climb and again at the top of the category three County Bounds (111.4 kilometres) before being reeled in by the main bunch. At the top of the County Bounds climb that big crash happened towards the front of the lineout, just as Tommy Evans and two others were forcing the pace. Race leader Bonca jumped across to the group while behind about ten riders hit the dirt, amongst them O'Loughlin, Griffin and Elliott. The three were able to rejoin the bunch, although damage caused to O'Loughlin's bike led him to take the bike of teammate Eugene Moriarty rather than wait for a replacement. Moriarty got a new bike and was able to get back up to the re-formed front group. With 35 kilometres remaining, Wales Stena Line rider Huw Pritchard broke clear, however he was joined by Lynch and Kevin Dawson, the former become race leader on the road when the break gained nearly a minute on the field The pendulum started to swing the opposite way with eleven kilometres to go, the Kazakhstan team coming to the front and starting to drive the peloton along. Sensing that the break was doomed, Dawson forged clear with nine kilometres remaining and built a decent lead; however, after reeling in Lynch and Pritchard, the bunch hauled back the British BBAR time trial champion with four kilometres to go and set the scene for that bunch finish, and Elliott's excellent win. The 42 year old's victory saw him move ahead of McCann in the green jersey competition. Yet, while he is just 49 seconds back in the general classification, lying seventh overall, he is playing down his chances with regards an outright victory in the event. "The race leader Bonca is very strong at the moment and there are a number of other contenders who are also going very well,' he said. "I think it's a long shot for me, with regards to winning the race.' However, after today's display he will be keen to aim for another stage win, with the concluding circuit race in the Phoenix Park this Sunday probably the ideal opportunity. Before then, the FBD Milk Rás has two more mountain stages. Tomorrow's 151 kilometre leg to Carrick on Suir sees the riders cross the third category climb of the Pike (119.8 kilometres) before the final summit finish to the top of Seskin Hill in Carrick on Suir. It has been a full 21 years since the last such finale to a stage; big crowds are expected for what should be a very dramatic finish. PhotographyImages by INPHO Sports Photography
