52nd FBD Milk Rás - 2.5Ireland, May 23-30, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 26: Charleville - Cahirciveen, 181 kmMcCann reigns in the KingdomBy Shane Stokes, Irishcycling.com For the second day running there was an Irish stage winner on the FBD Milk Rás, David McCann today soloing to an excellent win on the streets of Cahirciveen. McCann had been clear in a breakaway for much of the stage before being overhauled near the end, but still had enough strength to forge clear on the category one climb of Coominaspig with Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team-mate David O'Loughlin plus Valter Bonca (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj) and Petter Renäng (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), first and second in the overall classification. McCann counterattacked after an unsuccessful bid by O'Loughlin to escape, the Belfast man forging clear with about eight kilometres to go and opening up a good 26 second lead by the line. Second place on the tough Kerry mountain stage went to the Spanish-based Corkman Dermot Nally, a professional rider who is guesting with the Galway team in the race. He won yesterday's leg and might have repeated the feat today had McCann not gone clear when he did. McCann and Nally have both moved ahead of Malcolm Elliott (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) in the points classification by virtue of their first and second places on the stage. Elliott finished fifth on today's longest stage of the race, behind McCann, Nally, Valentin Iglinskiy (Kazakhstan) and Ireland - Thornton Recycling's David O'Loughlin. O'Loughlin's team-mate Denis Lynch also finished in the same group, placing eighth, and continues his progression up the general classification. Valter Bonca, the Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj professional, had a tough day today due to the pressure applied when McCann and nine others went up the road early on. He was strong over the final climbs but lost some of his advantage when McCann got clear near the end. Bonca continues to lead overall but McCann's ride sees him move up to fourth overall, 23 seconds back. Today's big reshuffling sees just six riders now within a minute of Bonca's lead. The Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team are perfectly poised to strike with O'Loughin, McCann and Lynch now third, fourth and fifth overall. They had been fourth, sixth and tenth respectively before the stage start and so can be justifiably satisfied with their upward progression. So too Nally, who moves one place to sixth and remains just 47 seconds down. Of the other contenders, Petter Renäng (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) stays in second place overall at six seconds. Former top European professional Malcolm Elliott is seventh, with his Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn team-mate Mark Lovatt eighth. Anthony Malarczyk (Wales - Stena Line) and Tobias Lergård (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) compete the top ten. In the other classifications, McCann leads Nally and Elliott in the points and Lergård heads Branko Filip (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj) and Renäng in the mountains competition. How it unfoldedAfter three days of mainly flat terrain, today's marathon 181 kilometre stage from Charleville to Cahirciveen was the first mountain stage of the race, with nine categorised climbs. Bonca knew he had a tough day in store, but was probably taken unawares when the attacks began from the drop of the flag. Before even half an hour had elapsed, he was already very much on the defensive. Five riders went clear just before Drumcolliher, 15 kilometres after the start in Charleville. They were quickly joined by three others, the eight man group opening up a 30 second lead over the main bunch. The break comprised Huw Pritchard (Wales - Stena Line), Kimmo Kananen (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Branko Filip (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj), Chris Kuhl (USA CRCA/Sakonnet), Kevin Dawson, Julian Winn (both Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn), Daniel Lynch (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) and John O'Shea (Tipperary Dan Morrissey). Lynch had been up the road for much of yesterday's stage but had the misfortune to puncture out of the move; twenty four hours later he was at it again. Recognising the opportunity, David McCann (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) and Paídi O'Brien (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) try to go across. They were reeled in, but McCann went again with Graham Briggs of the Great Britain Under 23 team and succeed in bridging across. Combining together, the ten riders set about building their lead over the main field. Over the next hour or so of racing they drew further and further away, opening an advantage of some four minutes over the race leader Valter Bonca and his Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj team-mates. Bonca and co. did what they could to limit their losses, getting assistance from Germany Stevens Von Hacht rider Jens Schwedler, who was in the process of losing his mountains jersey, but it was hard going. Bonca was faced with the realisation that even if he brought the break back, he would have expended valuable energy in the process. Up the road, Kananen had become the virtual yellow jersey. However, along with Filip he was contributing the least to the move; the latter had good reason not to work, with his team leader Bonca back the road, but Kananen had no such excuse. McCann was also on equal time to the Finn, lying two places further back in tenth on the general classification, but he had no qualms about working. Driving hard at the front, he joined with the other riders to keep the break going. Fellow Irishman Lynch was also keen to stay away with King of the Mountains points on offer; he rode well on the day's early climbs and ended up fourth in that classification. Kuhl sat up out of the break after 50 kilometres, going back to the bunch and leaving nine up front. The loss of one rider seemed to have no effect on the impetus of the group, who reached its maximum lead of four minutes shortly afterwards. The pendulum swung however after the climb of Glensharoon (63.4 kilometres) when the lead began to fall. Bonca's Slovenian team were now being assisted by the Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic squad of Petter Renäng, second overall, and this combined horsepower was enough to start making serious inroads into the break. By the time the leaders reached the cycling stronghold of Killorglin the gap was down to 2 minutes and 6 seconds and continuing to fall. Sensing that the game was up for the break, Julian Winn and Huw Pritchard went clear on the road towards Glenbeigh. The rest of the group was mopped up by the peloton, a fate which also befell the two leaders after the third category climb at Mount Foley (128 kilometres). Almost instantly, Eugene Moriarty (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) and Tim Barry (Tipperary Dan Morrissey) jumped away and opened up a half-minute lead. Several individuals and groups tried to get across to the leading duo as they raced in towards Cahirciveen and the start of the final 40 kilometre finishing loop. These chasers included Philip Cassidy (Meath Lee Strand), the veteran determined to hunt for a stage win, and also Moriarty's team-mate Tommy Evans. But the only one strong enough to make the junction was David O'Loughlin (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) who jumped across after Cahirciveen to join up with his team-mate Moriarty and Barry. As the leaders raced towards the second category ascent of Raheen, all hell was breaking lose behind. The ferocious pace set by the Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic-led peloton was wreaking havoc, sending large numbers of riders out the back. Moriarty got dropped from the break, leaving two up front, and was himself put into difficulty once he went back to the main field. On Raheen, O'Loughlin and Barry were reeled in as a large front group pressed ahead of the rest. Barry was dropped but an impressive O'Loughlin was strong enough to join with McCann and O'Loughlin (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling), Valentin Iglinskiy (Kazakhstan), Evan Oliphant (Great Britain Under 23), Anthony Malarczyk (Wales - Stena Line), Petter Renäng and Tobias Lergård (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), race leader Valter Bonca and Massimo Demarin (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj), Stefan Cohnen (Germany ComNet Senges), John Tanner and Malcolm Elliott (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn), Brian Ahern (Dublin Orwell Dundrum SC) and Dermot Nally (Galway). The unity of this group only lasted until Coonanaspic, a ferociously steep climb with several sharp hairpins. The race leader Bonca decided to put on a display on these slopes, leading most of the way up and blowing the break to smithereens. However, despite his time off the front, O'Loughlin was able to go with Bonca and Petter Renäng (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), showing his excellent form and recovery. McCann was another who was going well (again, despite his efforts in a break) and was able to bridge up to the leading trio just before the top. The four hurtled down the plunging descent and entered the final twenty kilometres with a lead of 23 seconds over Lergård, Cohnen and Nally. O'Loughin attacked but was closed down by Bonca, who was well aware that he had only a 22 second cushion in the general classification. But having closed down one Ireland - Thornton's Recycling rider, he had no answer when McCann kicked clear, the latter putting his time trial ability to good use and opening up a considerable lead. Behind, five more riders - Elliott, Tanner, Oliphant, Denis Lynch and Iglinskiy joined up with the Nally group and then reeled in Bonca, O'Loughlin and Renäng. McCann, though, was fully committed and would not be caught, racing into the streets of Cahirciveen 26 seconds clear and taking an excellent win. Nally was second across the line, following up his stage win yesterday with another fine placing and making it a one-two for Irish riders. Iglinskiy, O'Loughlin, Elliott and Bonca were next, with Lynch also finishing in this group and taking eighth. "I'm delighted to get this win, especially after being up the road for so long earlier in the stage," said McCann. "The group didn't really work that well and while we opened up a good gap, we got brought back. I had just enough time to recover and get ready for the last climbs, especially the first cat. Once over the top myself and David started attacking, I got a gap and just went for it." "Today worked out very well for the team. Three of us - myself, David and Denis Lynch - are now right up there overall and that puts us in a very strong position for the days to come. Any one of us could challenge for the jersey, so it will make it harder for the race leader." "We are very satisfied," said team manager Frankie Campbell. "The whole game plan was to try to get as many of our riders as possible close to the lead. The two Davids and Denis are right up there so the next few days will be interesting." A measure of the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling squad's strength is that for the third day running, they have taken the international team stage prize. They are also clear leaders in the overall standings of this category, with the Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn team almost three minutes back. Kerry lead the best county team while Nally is best county rider in that overall classification. McCann leads the points standings, Lergård the mountains and Cohnen the under 23 competition, just moving ahead of the impressive Sean Lacey (Kerry) by five seconds. Daire McCaughley (Dublin Wheelers All Systems) is best of the second cat riders. The FBD Milk Rás continues tomorrow with a 152 kilometre stage to Millstreet. The riders will take in three categorised climbs, including the category one ascents of Coomakista and Inchee mountain. These climbs come early in the stage, though, which may blunt their impact on the race.
