52nd FBD Milk Rás - 2.5Ireland, May 23-30, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 25: Oranmore - Charleville, 152 kmNally takes first pro win in home countyBy Shane Stokes, Irishcycling.com What a perfect homecoming. Spanish based Irishman Dermot Nally today became the first Irish stage winner of this year's FBD Milk Rás, sprinting home two seconds clear to the finish on the streets of Charleville and taking his first pro win in the process. Nally moved to Valencia from Cork city when he was six years of age and speaks English with strong undertones of a Spanish accent, yet winning here in Cork will go down a treat. The former Irish under 23 champion has been competing in the colours of the Paternina - Costa del Almeria team for the past year and a half. Knee problems earlier this year compromised his fitness yet today's fine showing will work wonders for his morale and motivation. The Galway Team rider has taken the stage win he came looking for, is now seventh overall and could well go on to bigger things in this race. What's more, the hope is that his career in general will start to flourish after today's fine ride. "It's great to get this win, it is the first of my pro career," he said at the finish. "Coming into the race I had targeted a stage victory and a top ten finish overall. I've got the first of those now and am up there in the general classification so I'm pretty happy with things so far." The Corkman displayed a perfect balance of tactics, strength and determination today, bridging across to a long established breakaway group at the right time and then choosing the perfect moment for the last-kilometre solo effort which carried him to the line. Second place went to Valeriy Dmitryev, the Kazakh showing great reserves in taking second after spending the whole day up the road. He nipped by the former Tour of Spain points winner Malcolm Elliott inside the final 100 metres, Elliott placing a disappointed third but inheriting the green jersey as best sprinter. Irish contenders David McCann and Denis Lynch were fifth and sixth, while the 22 year old Kerry rider Sean Lacey placed an excellent seventh. He takes over in the best young rider competition. Fellow Irishman Paul Healion (Dublin Usher IRC) was tenth. Overnight leader Valter Bonca finished alongside many of the other contenders in the main bunch, some 1 minute and 19 seconds behind Nally. The first five places overall remain unchanged, with Ireland - Thornton's Recycling rider David O'Loughlin in fourth. Lynch and Nally have moved up to sixth and seventh respectively, while Elliott is ninth and McCann is tenth. Lacey, Ritchie Cahill (Kerry) and Tommy Evans (Ireland - Thorton's Recycling) are eleventh, twelfth and fourteenth, and are all within a minute of Bonca's yellow jersey. Perfectly poised, in other words, if the legs are willing. How it happenedPaul Healion (Dublin Usher IRC) got the day's action underway with an attack in the first few minutes of racing, sparking off a seven-man breakaway which quickly gained time over the bunch. Healion's companions were Valeriy Dmitryev (Kazakhstan), Jamie Norfolk (Wales Stena Line), Mikael Segarsall (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Massimo Demarin (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj), Jens Schiwedler (Germany Stevens Von Hacht) and Kevin Dawson of the Yorkshire Murphy and Gunn team. The septet rode well together to put daylight between themselves and the rest of the field, their progress aided by the fact that the bunch seemed a little less willing to chase than had been the case yesterday. These seven were joined shortly afterwards by two reinforcements, in the shape of Ireland - Thornton's Recycling rider David McCann, second on yesterday's stage, and Daniel Lynch (Cork Kanturk Credit Union). With many of the strong teams represented, there was some blocking going on back in the bunch and this helped the break get established. By Gort (26 kilometres) the nine riders had extended their lead to over one minute, a lead which continued to grow. As the riders started the first of three King of the Mountains climbs at Killenena, their advantage was up to one minute and 50 seconds. Some scrappy jumping around ensued over the next 25 kilometres, the riders attacking each other at times instead of riding through, yet nevertheless they maintained this gap over the main field. During that time they crested three KOM summits, with Segarsall, Lynch and Schiwedler taking the top points at Killenena, Aylevaun and Ogonell respectively. The latter's solo effort on the final climb would prove to be enough to take over the mountains jersey from overnight leader Tobias Lergard (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic). As the break headed up over those rolling roads, McCann was clearly out of sorts. The Belfast man seemed to be under pressure whenever the road reared upwards, a surprising development given his second place yesterday and good form this year. Although position problems on the bike were one detail causing discomfort (he changed bikes in recent weeks), the main reason for his malaise was physiological. To put it simply, he was not quite firing on all cylinders. "I'm not quite sure why it happened, but I was having one of those off days," he said this evening. "My legs just didn't feel good today. I was never in danger of getting dropped on the climbs, but I definitely wasn't riding as I normally would. I'm a little worried about it with the mountains coming tomorrow but hopefully I will be okay. My nose is blocked up at the moment so I am just praying it isn't a cold coming on. "It was good getting into that move because sometimes it is easier being up the road when you are having an off day. It was very frustrating, though, with all that jumping around as if we had worked properly we could have taken several minutes out of the rest of the field. But there were some guys who wouldn't work and that started a bit of messing." That "messing" - a.k.a a lack of cooperation between those up the road - saw the bunch come close on several occasions. Heading into Killaloe after 77 kilometres, the lead was one minute and 12 seconds. Yet just seven kilometres later in Birdhill the bunch had closed to within ten seconds. It looked like the day's great escape had come to an end, but somehow the break managed to rally and draw clear once more. However before those up front drew further ahead, Nally jumped across to the break, followed several minutes later by Kimmo Kananen (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic). That made it eleven up front, although this dropped to ten when Lynch punctured. Healion tried to attack after Birdhill and indeed was clear for a while, but was reeled in by the rest of the break. They stayed largely together for some time after that, finally joining forces to try to fend off the chase behind. After Caherconlish, with just over forty kilometres remaining, five chasers managed to bridge across - namely Denis Lynch (Ireland - Thorton's Recycling), Malcolm Elliott (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn), plus the Kerry train of Sean Lacey, Ritchie Cahill and Vincent Gleeson - and then three others managed to join up. The addition of Tommy Evans (Ireland - Thorton's Recycling), Ivan Andreeyev (Kazakhstan) and Richard Eastham (North East England Bannatyne) with twenty kilometres to go swelled the front group to 18; these stayed together on the run in towards the finish in Charleville. With the main bunch now well over a minute behind, it was clear that one of the eighteen would take the stage. The most likely outcome was a sprint, with Elliott favoured to come out on top, but Nally had other ideas. Jumping clear on a drag inside the final kilometres, the Corkman hurtled clear to a two second margin of victory, crossing the line arms aloft and overjoyed with his first ever pro win. A disappointed Elliott looked set to take for second place but missed out on that when a fast-finishing Dmitreyev came off his wheel inside the final hundred metres. Third place, though, was good enough to earn him the green jersey of best sprinter, and he will keep trying to land that stage win for the rest of the race. As expected, Nally was delighted with his win. "It's my first professional victory, I'm very happy," he said. "I just went on the last hill, with about five or six hundred metres to go. I wasn't feel particularly strong and didn't think I was in with a chance of winning when we were heading towards the finish. But the other riders were looking at each other a bit, getting ready for the sprint, so I thought I would give it a go." "It worked out well for me early on when I got across to the break. The bunch had closed the gap right down. It was flat out at the time, in terms of speed, but I said that I would try to get across. I wasn't sure if I would make it, or if the break would end up staying clear, but things ended up fine. Coming into the race I had the goals of going for a stage win and finishing in the top ten overall. I've got the stage win and am now up there (he is seventh) so things are going well so far." Slovenian rider Valter Bonca retained his yellow jersey for the second day. But as he finished back in the main bunch, 1 minute and 19 seconds in arrears, things have become a bit tighter at the top. The riders who took the first five placings on day one - Bonca, Petter Renang (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Mark Lovatt (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn), O'Loughin and Anthony Malarczyk (Wales - Stena Line) - remain at the top of the leaderboard, but now ten others are within one minute of yellow. These include Irish riders Denis Lynch, Nally, McCann, Lacey Ritchie Cahill (Kerry) and Evans, so things are looking hopeful for the home riders going into the first real mountains tomorrow. "Tomorrow is the first real indicator as to how things really are," said O'Loughlin this evening. "Things have tightened up after today but one good thing is that instead of the race leader having only one Ireland rider to watch, he now has four. We can work with that, try to put him and the other contenders under pressure." "I got clear a couple of times today but once the break was gone, the bunch closed everything else down. I feel good, though, and had a pretty handy day today." Stage 4 - May 26: Charleville - Cahirciveen, 181 kmThe FBD Milk Rás continues tomorrow with the first real mountain stage of the race, a 181 marathon stage from Charleville to Cahirciveen. Eight categorised climbs await the riders, including the second category ascent of Cill Urlat and the first category Coonanaspic. Both come inside the final 26 kilometres of racing and should really shake up the overall classification. PhotographyImages by INPHO Sports Photography
