52nd FBD Milk Rás - 2.5Ireland, May 23-30, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 24: Trim - Oranmore, 167 kmCohnen the Destroyer takes Stage 2By Shane Stokes, Irishcycling.com Dutch professional Stefan Cohnen today won the second stage of the FBD Milk Rás with a determined solo attack. Racing clear towards the end of the 171 kilometre race from Trim to Oranmore, the 21 year old Germany ComNet Senges rider opened up a thirty second lead over the other riders in the large front group, and maintained eight seconds of this advantage in the final drive to the line. Cohnen's move came at the end of an exhausting day characterised by constant attacking and reshuffling at the head of the race. From the drop of the flag the pattern was set of groups of riders going clear and then being hauled back by the main field. Towards the end of the stage 31 riders succeeded in opening a significant gap over the rest of the bunch, and, following an unsuccessful breakaway by Glenn Bak (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Cohnen seized his chance to race clear. Ireland - Thornton's Recycling rider Tommy Evans tried to close down the move but was marked out of it by the rest of the break, giving Cohnen the opportunity needed to draw further away. Second on the stage was Evans's team-mate David McCann, the self-professed non-sprinter having enough form and speed to reach the line first of the chasing group. McCann's turn of pace held off former top professional Malcolm Elliot (Yorkshire-Murphy and Gunn), with Curtis Gunn (USA/Britain) fourth and Kerry rider Paul Griffin taking fifth and snatching the points jersey. Seventh place went to the Spanish-based Irish professional Dermot Nally (Galway), while Paídi O'Brien (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) was eighth and Griffin's team-mate Sean Lacey tenth. There was little change in the overall classification, with stage one winner Valter Bonca (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj) maintaining his six second lead over Petter Renäng (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic). Mark Lovatt (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) remains in third, while David O'Loughlin (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) and Anthony Malarczyk (Wales - Stena Line) stay in fourth and fifth. Cohnen's fine ride today moves him up into sixth place, overtaking last year's FBD Milk Rás runner-up Tobias Lergård. In the other classifications, Lergård (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Cohnen and Griffin are best in the mountains, under 23 and best county rider competitions respectively, while Brian Taafe (Dublin Wheelers All Systems) leads the second category contest. The Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team were best international team on the stage while in the general classification that distinction stays with the Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj squad. Kerry were top county team on the stage and also lead that competition in the overall standings. How it unfoldedToday's flat, sun baked 171 kilometre stage was a day where the race radio burned with constant updates of who was heading up the road and who was chasing behind. Groups would get clear but then get reeled back in once more, causing an ever-changing stream of information which was confusing for those in the press car but, doubtlessly, far more bewildering for those in the race. Yesterday's opening stage saw five riders gain nearly two minutes on the race; today, it seemed, the sole tactic was to take no more chances but to simply bring everything back. The first rider to get the hostilities under way was the double FBD Milk Rás winner Philip Cassidy, who launched a characteristic early attack as soon as the flag dropped. Before the race, he had stated that a stage win was his goal for the week; going up the road inside the first mile showed how serious he was in chasing that ambition. However it was not to be. After one mile the 42 year old punctured and was passed by the rest of the field. His woes continued when he crashed during the ensuing chase, hitting a car in the cavalcade while racing to get back on. Cut and bruised, the Meath Lee Strand rider did eventually regain the main field but his bid for stage glory took a big knock with that fall. Following Cassidy's blighted bid, a number of short-lived efforts followed, such as the combination of Eugene Moriarty (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team) and USA/Britain's Curtis Gunn plus another with Huw Pritchard (Wales - Stena Line) and Kevin Dawson (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn). These enlivened matters without having a lasting effect, the bunch coming back up to the riders in each case. A bigger and more dangerous looking move was established as the race approached the day's second prime sprint at Ballymore (70.1 kilometres/43.6 miles). Moriarty, Anthony Malarczyk (Wales - Stena Line), Kimmo Kananen (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Matej Stare (Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj), Malcolm Elliott (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn), Daniel Lynch (Cork Kanturk Credit Union) and Mark Cassidy (Meath Lee Strand) raced clear and contested the sprint, won by Malarczyk. However all bar Lynch were soon back in the fold, the Marseille-based Irishman persisting with a solo effort. He was joined soon afterwards by team-mate Tommy Evans (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) and Philip Cassidy (Meath Lee Strand), with Tobias Lergård (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) and Irish professional Dermot Nally (Galway) coming across as reinforcements shortly afterwards. The presence of five strong riders seemed to bode well, but after losing two minutes to a similar-sized group yesterday the main bunch was in no mood to repeat the mistake. They quintet were promptly hauled back. Undeterred by the bunch's attentiveness, David O'Loughlin (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling) and Brian Ahern (Dublin Orwell Dundrum Shopping Centre) decided to give it a go soon afterwards and built a useful lead. Lynch bridged across to give O'Loughlin, who was fourth overall, some assistance in holding off the main bunch but after thirty kilometres up front, they too were recaptured. Almost immediately another stream of attacks were launched. O'Loughlin and Lynch, fortunately, had enough strength left to respond and soon found themselves as part of a 31-man group. Also present were their Ireland - Thornton's Recycling team-mates David McCann, Tommy Evans and Eugene Moriarty plus most of the race favourites, although contenders such as Mark Lovatt (Yorkshire - Murphy and Gunn) and Griffin (Kerry) had to do it the hard way and come across from the bunch. Once the move was established a pattern of attack, chase and counterattack started to unfold. Glenn Bak (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic) finally managed to break the elastic and got away for a while, opening up a 25 second lead and staying clear until about 23 kilometres to go. A number of others then tried, including Evans, but it was Cohnen who finally succeed in getting a good lead with about twelve kilometres to go. Riding strongly and fully committed to his effort, he opened up a thirty second lead. And, while the riders behind did manage to rally somewhat before the finish, he had enough in hand to race home eight seconds ahead of McCann, Elliott, Gunn, Griffin and the rest of that chasing bunch to take an excellent win. "It was quite a tough stage," he said after the presentation. "Other riders were attacking all day. I had good legs and when I saw my chance towards the end, I went for it. I am strong on the hills and had planned to try something later in the week, but when I got the chance today I seized it." "Stefan was very strong," confirmed Ireland's David McCann. "I finished well and think I might have won the stage had he not been up the road, but he took his chance and had the strength to pull it off. "I'm not really a sprinter but when I am in good form I can do all right at these types of finishes. It was a fast run-in and one of the Americans almost hit a car - it was pretty ropey. I ended up in a good position and was able to have a go at the end, taking second on the stage." When asked how he thought his form was, McCann gave a cautious answer. "My legs don't feel great but if I can get up in a bunch sprint, then I must be going okay. Today was a good day for the team, all five of us made it into that split so we are happy. I think most of the favourites were there, but some of them had a hard ride trying to get across." Yesterday's winner Valter Bonca was one who had little problems. "Today wasn't too difficult. My team were very good and worked well for me, helping me to keep the jersey. I am looking forward to the mountains later in the week, that is my favourite type of terrain so we will see how things work out." Bonca, a 36 year old professional, competed with the Amore e Vita and Joli teams earlier in his career and rode two Tours of Italy. He should be more than able for the climbs in the second half of the race; with that in mind, the other contenders will do what they can on tomorrow's rolling 152 kilometre stage to Charleville to take back some time.
