52nd FBD Milk Rás - 2.5Ireland, May 23-30, 2004Stage 1 - May 23: Dublin - Trim, 132 kmBonca in yellow after stage oneBy Shane Stokes, irishcycling.com Twelve months ago the Ireland team started their FBD Milk Rás campaign in what seemed like the best possible way, Tommy Evans riding to an impressive stage win and taking the first yellow jersey of the 2.5 ranked event. It seemed like the perfect scenario, but then the Rás is a long, unpredictable and somewhat uncontrollable race. Evans held the jersey for two stages but then lost out to Great Britain rider Chris Newton, the Irish challenge collapsing on the Gap of Mamore stage of the race. One year later, the campaign has started on a slightly different note. Favoured rider David O'Loughlin - who showed his good form with recent victories in the Shay Elliott Memorial and the Lincoln Grand Prix, both 1.5 ranked races - today finished fourth on the opening leg of the race. On this occasion the top honours and first yellow jersey went to Slovenian Perutnina Ptuj rider Valter Bonca, who sprinted home two seconds clear of Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic's Petter Renang. O'Loughlin was led in a further ten seconds later by Mark Lovatt (Yorkshire Team Murphy and Gunn), but what was the most important fact was that the other contenders in the race lost a significant amount of time. Anthony Malarczyk was the only other rider finishing close to Bonca, the Wales-Stena Line rider ending the day eighteen seconds off the winning pace. The rest of the field were all at least one minute and 56 seconds down, giving the five escapees a significant advantage at this early stage. Of course, two minutes in the FBD Milk Rás is not a huge amount of time. The race is known for its unpredictability and uncontrollability, but in recent years gains have been measured in seconds rather than minutes. Make no mistake about it; the Ireland - Thornton's Recycling squad will be very satisfied tonight with what has been a good start. "I'm quite happy with how things went," said O'Loughlin after the stage. "I was pretty comfortable in the move, at the end the difference was down to a bit of racing," he said. "Last year the team got the jersey on the first stage (Tommy Evans won) and it was very difficult to defend it. This morning we had a talk and decided that it would be no harm if we didn't get it so early. I am still very much in contention so I am pretty happy. "I was surprised the gap grew so quickly after we got away. I think there were two reasons; in the bunch, the Slovenians controlled the pace and slowed down the bunch, while up front the five of us were very committed and worked hard to get a good lead. It worked out well in the end." "The plan for the next couple of stages is to ride them like a one day race and then see how things stand. My goal is to stay in contention and then take it from there." Today's action started soon after the drop of the flag with eight riders going clear inside the first ten miles. Mikael Segarsall (Scandinavia Bianichi Nordic) and Uwe Senegewald (Germany Stevens Von Hacht) were the initial aggressors, their attack inspiring six others to get involved. Denis Lynch (Ireland - Thornton's Recycling), Glenn Bak and Tobias Lergard (both Scanindavia Bianchi Nordic), Branko Filip (Slovenia Perutnina), Jens Schiwedler (Germany Stevens Van Hacht) and the 1983 and 1999 FBD Milk Ras winner Philip Cassidy (Meath Lee Strand) joined up with the leaders and set about building a very solid lead. 2000 stage winner Tjarco Cuppens (Germany ComNet Senges) and Irish professional Dermot Nally (normally racing with Paternina Costa Almeria but now guesting with Galway) recognised the danger of letting a move like this go, particularly with three Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic riders driving the break. The two attempted to bridge the gap but were reeled in after a short while by the main bunch. Eugene Moriarty (Ireland - Thorton's Recycling) was another to try but he too conceded defeat as the leading octet opened a near-two minute lead. The break certainly had a dangerous look to it. Their relentless pace saw at total of twenty-eight miles covered within the first hour, a rude awakening for those in the bunch who were hoping for a gradual start to the FBD Milk Rás. For the Scandinavians, Lergas's second place overall twelve months ago was the perfect motivator to ride. For others such as Cassidy, the prospect of a stage victory was a strong incentive to drive hard and maintain their advantage. Sengewald took the first of three hot spot sprints when he was first across the line at Stamullen, taking the three second bonus, while Lynch and Lergard scooped two and one second respectively. Lergard was then first to the top of the King of the Hills prime at Greenanstown, taking the points ahead of Bak and Filip. However, despite their initial good lead, a lapse in concentration and application saw the break start to lose time on the main field, with the gap dropping to just 59 seconds by the 31 mile point. The faltering escape had enough in hand to hold out for a while longer, Lergard and Filip taking the bonus seconds and points at the combined King of the Hills/hot spot sprint at Slane. Lynch, Schiwedler, Bak and Cassidy joined up to the two riders to make it six up front. The bunch was chasing hard but these riders were able to work well enough together to hold out until after the next combined KOH/hot spot prime in Collen. Here, Filip, Lergard and Schiwedler took the points before the break sat up and was reabsorbed by the main field. As expected, their recapture sparked off a flurry of attacks and it wasn't long before another move went clear. After about fifty miles of racing David O'Loughin (Ireland-Thorton's Recycling), Anthony Malarczyk (Wales Stena Line), Petter Renang (Scandinavia Bianchi Nordic), Valter Bonca (Slovenia Perutnina) and Mark Lovatt (Yorkshire Murphy and Gunn) raced clear. This quintet had the look of a particularly dangerous combination, containing as it did five strong riders who wasted little time in getting a committed paceline going. From there the gap grew steadily. After about three or four miles they had opened a lead of 34 seconds; shortly afterwards, the commissaries reported that the advantage had grown to well over a minute. And then, when it was confirmed with twelve miles remaining that the disorganised main bunch were two and a half minutes down, it was clear that one of the five would take the stage and the first yellow jersey of the race. It just remained to see who that would be. Malarczyk was the first to throw down the gauntlet, jumping clear after sitting on the back of the break, feigning tiredness. He was brought back and Renang countered; the other riders reeled him in but then with two miles remaining he surged once more and opened up a lead. Head down and legs pumping, the Swede raced into the streets of Trim with the stage win and yellow jersey foremost on his mind. However it was not to be; Bonca was strong enough to bridge the gap and, after a short respite on Renang's wheel, kicked hard to go clear. He was duly first to the line, with a disappointed Renang second and Lovatt outsprinting O'Loughlin to take third. "I thought I had it at the end," Renang confirmed. "I attacked with three kilometres to go and got clear. I kept pushing, wasn't looking back at all. I had a quick glance with about 500 metres to go and saw Bonca on my wheel. He had been there for a while and straight away I realised I wasn't going to win the stage." "I was a little disappointed not to get the victory but in some ways this is good for my general classification chances. My team don't have to defend the jersey and I am perfectly poised. Myself and Tobias (Lergard) are the two guys for the overall, so we can be happy with today. He was in the first move and I made it into the second, so we covered both breaks well." Renang has had five wins so far this season and is keen to add to that total. He rates the 1.5 ranked Paris-Baretin Yvetot as his biggest triumph thus far. With an overall deficit of six seconds he has started the FBD Milk Rás in a very satisfactory way. Later in the week, when the roads steepen, he will be hoping to capitalise on his climbing talents. Tonight, though, the most content rider is Bonca. Stage winner, yellow jersey holder and points leader; it was a good day for the rider who last year finished second in both the Slovenian road race and time trial championships. Yet he so nearly was not going to take part in the race; three days ago race director Dermot Dignam was in frantic discussions with the Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj team about their participation in the FBD Milk Rás. The team had sent a communication to Dignam informing him that due to injury to two riders, they would not be taking part. The race director insisted that a late withdrawal would not be acceptable, and so the team eventually agreed to honour their agreement to ride. They will be happy they did. Besides Bonca's success, they were also best team today and lead the same classification in the overall standings. The Ireland team's experience last year shows the difficulty of defending the lead in a race such as the FBD Milk Rás. Slovenia Perutnina Ptuj may decide to either defend the jersey tomorrow or to relinquish the lead, but either way the feeling is that they will be a big factor in the action in the days to come. The 2004 FBD Milk Rás continues tomorrow with a flat 171 kilometre stage from Trim to Oranmore. PhotographyImages by Shane Stokes/www.irishcycling.com
