The 56th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - 2.HCFrance, June 6-13, 2004Main page Results Stage profile Previous Stage Next stage Stage 6 - June 12: Gap - Grenoble, 144 kmChicken plays possum, wins stage soloMayo and Euskaltel orange crush in commandBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Grenoble After stomach cramps on Ventoux on Thursday ended his changes for a high GC finish in the 56th Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré, Danish climber Michael Rasmussen (1999 World MTB Champion) took it easy in yesterday's stage to Sisteron, losing 11'47" and dropping out of contention for the overall. But on today's penultimate stage, Rasmussen took a gamble and attacked from the start up the Col Bayard out of Gap, looking for a stage win. "I had to make up for yesterday when I took it easy", explained the rail-thin Dane whose mountain bike nickname 'Chicken' is beginning to circulate in the road peloton. "Yesterday I made a tactical decision to take it easy and today it worked out." Rasmussen's director sportif Erik Breukink told Cyclingnews that, "After Michael had problems on the Ventoux, he wasn't that interested in 9th on GC, so he took it easy yesterday to attack today. Yes, you can plan it, but to do it is another thing." Despite the daunting stage profile, a strong headwind and the loss of his break partner Ivan Basso (CSC) to a mechanical halfway to Grenoble, Chicken's possum game paid off with a big win today in Grenoble. "It was hard out front, with that strong headwind all day...but I was feeling good. The Luitel was tough, but it was tough for everybody and once I got eight minutes lead, they weren't gaining on me behind", smiled Rasmussen. And Chicken had a double dip today, as his long break earned him enough KOM points to take over the polka-dot jersey of Best Climber in the Dauphiné Libéré. Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and his team controlled the race well again, and as Rasmussen wasn't a big threat, the orange crush of Euskaltel-Euskadi were content to ride a hard tempo all day across the climbs of Isere. The much expected attacks on the long, hard climb of the Col du Luitel didn't really materialize, as Phonak was expected to attack Euskaltel. But when Tyler Hamilton crashed hard on a left hand bend on the descent of the Col de la Morte after 90km, it threw a monkey wrench in the Swiss team's plans. After the stage, Hamilton described his crash saying, "I had a lot of speed in the corners trying to pass a guys; I kinda did a Beloki." With torn side panel on his shorts, plenty of road rash and blood caked on the inside of his left forearm from his scraped left elbow. After a long hard 33 km chase down the rest of the Col de la Morte and up and over the Col du Luitel, Hamilton finally got back to the groupe Maillot Jaune in Uriage. "We were lucky Hamilton crashed," said Rabobank director Breukink, "since Phonak didn't attack." With second place Tyler unable to set up his third place teammate Oscar Sevilla to attack Mayo on the Luitel, Euskaltel just rode hard tempo and didn't have to scramble on the way to Grenoble today. Although he ended up riding 60km solo behind Rasmussen when his chain came off on the aptly named Col de la Morte, CSC's Ivan Basso wasn't too disappointed about finishing runner up. "Today was a test for me", explained Basso. "I felt good, but the Tour is still a long way away." Australian Stuart O'Grady still has the Maillot Vert of points leader and Stuey remains optimistic. "Tomorrow is the last day," said the smiling Adelaide man, who is looking better and better as the main man for the TDF Maillot Vert if he can maintain his form for the Grande Boucle. Just behind O'Grady is Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com), who was the Maillot Vert in last year's Tour de France and with his Achilles tendon injury improving, isn't going to let Stuey get to Paris in Green without a fight. How it unfoldedThe two escapees of the day, Rasmussen and Basso, wasted no time before beginning their day-long move. The duo quickly established a gap and despite a short-lived counter attack from Christophe Le Mevel (Crédit Agricole) and stage 3 winner Nicolas Portal (Ag2r-Prévoyance) they began to pile on the minutes as the peloton was content to let them go. Basso took the first mountain points over the Col Bayard, as Le Mevel's team leader Christophe Moreau abandoned on the climb due to breathing problems. By the 30 kilometre mark, the break already had five minutes in hand before hitting the small Côte du Motty climb. Race leader Iban Mayo's Euskaltel-Euskadi team kept a steady tempo in the main bunch with US Postal Service always nearby, but Mayo's men weren't worried about the time gaps to the leaders, only watching the likes of Armstrong and Hamilton. After Basso lost his chain it was up to Rasmussen to keep going, clearly feeling strong enough having decided not to wait for his companion who thus far had crossed each climb's summit in first position. With nine minutes on the peloton at the summit of the Col de la Morte, Rasmussen was well on his way to a fine stage win. A flurry of attacks from riders like Carlos Sastre, José Azevedo, and former race leader José Enrique Gutierrez did nothing to break the Euskaltel-led pack, nor did the moves threaten Chicken's escape. By the time the heads of state crossed the difficult Col du Luitel, however, the yellow jersey's group was down to just 22 riders, with all the major players were present. Rasmussen continued his solo effort and cruised home for a deserved victory in Gap. Basso arrived in second place but having lost Chicken's wheel he slowed steadily, finishing 5'20 down on Rasmussen and with the yellow jersey group just 1'23 behind him. Mayo enjoyed a relatively stress-free day in yellow before the Dauphiné's final test around Grenoble on Sunday. Stage 7 - June 13: Grenoble - Grenoble, 200 kmSunday's final 200 km stage around Grenoble is no sprinters romp. After a flat first 60 km, the riders climb the Cat. 2 Col de l'Echarasson (1146m) followed by the Cat. 4 Col de Carri (1202m) and Cat. 2 Col d'Herbouilly (1374m) with its summit at km 112. Then there is a drop down into the valley before the final climbing obstacle of the Dauphiné is reached: the Cat. 1 Col de Sarcenas (1156m), a 10.5 km climb averaging 6.5%. The summit is at 15 km to go, so once again there will be a fast, downhill plunge into Grenoble to determine the winner of the 2004 Critérium du Dauphiné-Libéré. PhotographyImages by AFP Photo
