Big Day! Stuey breaks through for the team

"Big day...I'm stuffed", an exhausted, delighted Stuart O'Grady told Cyclingnews on Avenue Liberté in Sisteron today after his terrific Dauphiné Libéré stage win in Sisteron, his second this season and 37th career pro bouquet. "Our team really deserved a win this week...after a few close calls and a few tactical errors, but the team has just been absolutely fantastic. This morning at our team meeting, we decided that all the eggs were in my basket and no matter what, I had to get in the break and try and win today."

It's been a rotten spring for Stuey and the Cofidis mob, what with the enforced stop for the troubled team over a doping scandal. But adversity can sometimes bring unity to a difficult situation and O'Grady has shown great leadership during the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré to get his squad ready for the upcoming Tour De France.

With 60 kilometres to go, O'Grady and Hincapie had a chat in the day's breakaway and the freckle-faced rider from Adelaide knew he had to play his cards right. "I realized that with two US Postal riders, I had to go with one of them. And I didn't want to go too late. When I did attack, it was just a matter of psychological warfare with the other guys behind."

O'Grady described his dynamic duo with Hincapie by saying, "Man, we were going and the guys behind would have to be going really hard to get us." Somewhat of an understatement, considering the talent and power of both riders. "It was a hardcore day; we could see them just behind most of the break, but I knew if we could get over that hill the second time, there was absolutely no way we were going to get caught."

His blue USPS-Berry Floor jersey crusted with white sweat salt, big George Hincapie seemed a little disappointed at not winning today in Sisteron, but just a little. Hincapie explained post race to the media scrum that "Stuart and I both did an all out effort today...I knew that he is faster than me in sprints, but I took the risk that he was more tired than me today. We went mano a mano today and he still won", smiled Hincapie.

"I'm disappointed; I wanted to win...I haven't raced in a while and I thought I would try to go in the break and it worked. We both worked at the limit today; there was no holding back if we were going to stay away."

Hincapie made his move with O'Grady with 40km to go after a chat with Lance Armstrong. "I was sitting in the back talking to Lance and I told him I was going to the front to check the situation out. Then I got in the break! It was one of those days that I knew I wouldn't get in the break," joked Hincapie, who then headed to the Dauphiné podium to where he was awarded the prize for Most Combative Rider of the day.

Third place went to the improving Baden Cooke (FDJ.Com) over Jerome Pineau (Brioches), while USPS-Berry Floor's Victor Peña hung on for 9th, 3'00 ahead "I had to win today, since I'm not going to win tomorrow", O'Grady joked about Saturday's difficult mountain stage.

Maillot Jaune/Bleu Mayo and Lance Armstrong finished in the peloton six minutes behind. Armstrong's number one fan Sheryl Crow was waiting for her man in Sisteron, which is certain to give him some additional motivation. A confident Iban Mayo said post-race that, "Today's stage was what I thought it would be like, with attacks and a good break. It was a good test for the team, since this is a young group here without experience, so they need work to control the race. We wanted to check how it would work out, because we hope we can defend the Yellow Jersey in the Tour de France. My Ventoux win yesterday gave me more motivation than ever for the Tour and more reasons to believe I can win it. As for tomorrow, I don't know the parcours, but I expect that Phonak and Armstrong will attack me, but I'm in top form now."

How it unfolded

On a warm early afternoon in Bollene in the Rhone River valley, 87 riders headed east towards Sisteron into the rocky back country of central Provence. As the parcours went from Vaucluse into the Drome there were many attacks, but nothing stuck until 37 km when nine riders made a break, including Krivtsov (Ag2r), two Australians, O'Grady (Cofidis) and Cooke, Hincapie and Peña (USPS-Berry Floor), Fedrigo (Credit Agricole), Jalabert (Phonak), Pineau (Brioches) and De Groot (Rabobank) The lead was 6'10" at the Col de la Mevouillon where Pineau took the KOM points ahead of De Groot. On the next KOM on the Col de la Pigiere, De Groot turned the tables on Pineau.

The break pounded along towards the two 11 km finishing circuits, including the steep 1km Cote du Thor climb, but after 104km, O'Grady attacked hard and Hincapie went with him. The move blew the break apart, with Jalabert, Pineau and Cooke chasing. 10km later, the two attackers had 0'30 on the remains of the chasing break and at the start of the first finishing circuit, Stuey and George were 0'42 ahead of the chasers, with the Euskaltel led peloton at 7'35".

O'Grady and Hincapie were determined to stay away and collaborated perfectly until the last 200 meters, when Stuey sprinted in to victory, just ahead of the USPS-Berry Floor man. Cooke was third, 1'33 behind, while break rider Victor Hugo Peña rolled in 9th, 3'00 ahead of the peloton where Hushovd took the bunch sprint 6'12 behind O'Grady. Both Dauphiné leader Mayo, Hamilton and Armstrong finished quietly in the peloton.

Stage 6 - June 12: Gap-Grenoble 144km

This penultimate stage of the 56th Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré is the queen stage of the week-long race. Saturday's stage opens with the climb out of Gap of Col Bayard then heads north across the Departement of Isere. After 56 kilometres, Stage 6 begins to climb in earnest for 30 kilometres across La Mure, Col de Malissol, through the feed zone and then up Col de la Morte after 85km.

Stage 6 plunges down to Sechilienne, then ascends the seldom scaled and very difficult 9km, 9.5% average grade Col du Luitel. After the Ventoux, this long, steep ascent will be the most difficult climbing challenge of the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, where a selection will likely be made among the favorites. Charly Gaul made a brilliant attack on this climb when he won the Tour De France in 1958 to win the stage from Briançon from Aix-les-Bains by almost 8'00. Then it's down to Uriage with 21.5km to race, then two more small climbs with a dangerous, sinuous descent of the Cote des 4 Seigneurs, just before the finish on Grenoble's boulevard Clemenceau.
