The 56th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - 2.HCFrance, June 6-13, 2004Main page Results Stage profile Previous Stage Stage 7 - June 13: Grenoble - Grenoble, 200 kmO'Grady unstoppable!Mayo seals Dauphiné successBy Chris Henry Stuart O'Grady has, at least for the moment, achieved something special. The Australian, who this season joined the French Cofidis team, has learned to climb without sacrificing any of his speed in the sprints. The result? Two stage victories in the Dauphiné Libéré, which is anything but a flat stage race. After a long attack with George Hincapie in stage 5, O'Grady was on the offensive again in the race's final stage, a potentially decisive stage around Grenoble featuring four categorised climbs. "I'm very happy for a big day like this, and I owe a big thanks to the team," O'Grady commented after his victory Sunday. "Three times I've been second for the green jersey at the Tour de France, and this is good for the confidence with three weeks to go." Buoyed by his stage 5 win and cracking race form, O'Grady decided to follow the attacks early, clearly unafraid of the climbs which lay ahead. Sandy Casar (FDJeux.com) was the first to make a serious move, sparking a break of six riders including O'Grady, Nicolas Reynaud (RAGT Semences-MG Rover), Pedro Horrillo (Quick.Step-Davitamon), Anthony Geslin (Brioches La Boulangère), and Dmitriy Muravyev (Crédit Agricole). The six worked perfectly together and as none represented a threat to the general classification, race leader Iban Mayo and his Euskaltel-Euskadi team were content to let them go. The gap quickly grew to nearly 13 minutes, all but assuring the stage victor would emerge from the lead group. O'Grady, wearing the green jersey of points leader, was the obvious danger man in the group, and none of the others would be too willing to drag him to the finish only to let him run away with the sprint. Like clockwork, the group splintered as soon as it hit the final climb of the day, the Col de Sarcenas. Muravyev was the first to go, accelerating from the first position and opening up a decent gap. O'Grady himself took the responsibility to chase the Kazakh, and only Casar could follow. The two steadily pulled back Muravyev, who had no answer for their acceleration and could not hold the wheels as the duo pulled through. On their own to fight out the final climb, Casar and O'Grady rode steadily up the uneven slopes of the Sarcenas. O'Grady appeared the stronger of the two, but it was Casar who was the first to put in attack, knowing he had little chance against the Aussie if they crested the summit together. Casar steadily pulled away from O'Grady, but the time gap never topped 20 seconds. O'Grady never lost faith, and just as Casar gradually opened a gap, O'Grady steadily pulled it back, catching the Frenchman with just over 2km left to the summit. Casar had no more attacks in the legs, and as O'Grady took the mountain points and began the plunge back to Grenoble, he was clearly back in control. Casar had trouble keeping pace on the fast, sweeping descent, and thanks to relentless pressure and a fair share of risk, O'Grady pulled away through every turn, out of the saddle and driving hard at every moment. By the time he hit flat ground and the finishing stretch in Grenoble, he had 19 seconds in hand. Just enough time to savour his second victory of the week and enjoy a job well done. The group of yellow jersey Iban Mayo dwindled over the course of the day, but all of the top favourites remained in contact as Euskaltel-Euskadi assumed a steady tempo throughout the stage. Mayo's race lead was never in danger as Phonak was content to follow the wheels of the Basque team. The only riders to put in a counter attack behind the fragmented lead group were David Moncoutié (Cofidis) and Levi Leipheimer (Rabobank). Leipheimer dropped Moncoutié near the summit of the final climb but never gained more than a handful of seconds over Mayo and the rest. More a tough training ride than serious bid for an advance in the general classification, Leipheimer's move did show the American to be comfortable on the climb as he resisted capture by remaining fifty metres ahead of the Mayo group for several minutes. Lance Armstrong was content to follow the wheels for the final day, which he did without any trouble, save for a brief disruption of his effort as he unexpectedly pulled his left foot out of his pedal. Hamilton was comfortable surrounded by three Phonak teammates but never attacked or sought to erase the 36 second defecit behind Mayo. Next stop: Tour de FranceFor the principal actors in the Dauphiné Libéré, particularly those tipped as the top favourites for the Tour de France general classification, the week-long race was the final major test before the "Grande Boucle" in France. Three points of reference were provided in the performances of Mayo, Armstrong, and Hamilton, while other riders like Oscar Sevilla and Juan Miguel Mercado showed solid condition well worthy of causing a Tour de France stir. Iban Mayo came to the Dauphiné to win. After a hard-fought battle with Armstrong last year, when he put the American in difficulty but ultimately missed the final step of the podium, Mayo was intent on stamping his authority on this year's Dauphiné. That he did. With a victory in the prologue, a resounding triumph on the slopes of the Mont Ventoux, and nary a moment of weakness throughout the week, Mayo and his Euskaltel teammates achieved exactly what they aimed for. "I like this race a lot," said a typically subdued Mayo before climbing the podium after the final stage. "This is a great victory. My biggest win is perhaps still at Alpe d'Huez in last year's Tour, but this is important too. "Every rider likes to be in a yellow jersey, but I know that the Tour de France will be different. But for the moment I'm very happy with my race and this victory." Lance Armstrong came to the Dauphiné to train and prepare for the Tour. The Dauphiné's two-time defending champion made it clear he did not want to dig too deep into his pre-Tour reserves and repeat the struggle against Mayo et. al. Even if Mayo expected the US Postal leader to come out fighting anyway, most realized Armstrong was firm in his intentions and would only focus on the two tests against the clock. Third place behind Mayo and Hamilton in the prologue was acceptable. On Mont Ventoux, Armstrong's fifth place incited more speculation about his condition but by no means was worthy of great concern for his Tour de France potential. He expected to go faster up the mountain, but showed no sign of panic after losing so much time to Mayo. He finished the Dauphiné in fourth place in the classification, two minutes behind Mayo. The two minutes were lost in the time trials, but Armstrong showed no weakness during the climbing stages and even sprinted to finish the final stage first among the Mayo/Hamilton group. "It was an interesting week," Armstrong commented on French television Sunday. "It was a tough week. I didn't feel as good as I thought I would, but we also saw a super Iban Mayo, and a super Tyler Hamilton." Armstrong conceded without hesitation that he still had work to do in training before the Tour de France, but the five-time winner remains as ever the man to beat this year as he has been the last four. And his rivals know this. Hamilton too provided his own story. More than ever Hamilton is a contender for the Tour de France title this year, riding as sole leader for the Swiss Phonak team which in recent weeks has burst onto the scene with a number of riders in excellent condition. Hamilton took Armstrong's approach to the Dauphiné, testing himself in the two time trials but not concerning himself with his final place in the classification. The difference between the two was that the 'other' American came out ahead, finishing second overall just 36" behind Mayo. Hamilton was second in both time trials and turned out to be Mayo's greatest threat. For these three, and many others, the stage is set for another exciting Tour de France. Armstrong could be facing more serious rivals than he has throughout his Tour de France reign, and the odds are against him as he tries to become the first man ever to win a sixth Tour. Arch rival Jan Ullrich may be returning to his best form once again, but Armstrong knows that he has more than just the German to worry about come July. "This will be the hardest Tour for me," he admitted. PhotographyImages by AFP Photo
