6th Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under - 2.3Australia, January 20-25, 2004Home Live report Results Previous Stage Stage 6: Sunday Jan 25, Adelaide City Council circuit, 81kmCooke gets his revenge; Jonker goes out on topBy Gabriella Ekström in Adelaide Baden Cooke finally got his stage win after being perfectly set up for the sprint by his FDJeux.com teammates. "This is a stage I really like. I have been second here before, but I've never won it," Baden told Cyclingnews after the finish line, also confessing to be 'absolutely stoked' with his victory. UniSA's Patrick Jonker finished just behind the leading group after actively defending his yellow jersey during the stage. When he crossed the line, Jonker declared that he was now an ex-professional, and also expressed his admiration for his team: "UniSA is a composite team of young Australians, and although they are not very experienced, they have still been up there every day to battle it out with the European pros. They have done an awesome job for me." How it unfoldedMost riders expected that the UniSA team and the sprinters teams would control the race from the start, but they had to prove their worth before the stage was over. The riders took off from the gun, with the initial attack coming from Domina Vacanze's Francesco Secchiari. The race saw several attacks during the first four laps, but no-one managed to get more than a maximum of a ten seconds lead on the peloton before Erki Putsep (Ag2r), Eric Leblacher (Credit Agricole), Massimo Giunti and Massimiliano Mori (Domina Vacanze), Bernhard Eisel (FDJeux.com) and Jeff Louder (Navigators) attacked with 13 laps to go, and built up an advantage of 20 seconds. The Quick.Step team went to the front after seven laps, keen to bring the two groups together again since their sprinter Aurelien Clerc was targeting the two intermediate sprints in an attempt to steal the sprinters jersey off Robbie McEwen's shoulders. The blue and white Belgian train made a welcome addition to the UniSA team, which had been working hard all week and was now losing some of its riders out the back of the peloton. Unable to bring the escaped riders back in time for the first sprint, Clerc saw valuable points go to waste after Massimo Giunti won the first sprint ahead of Eric Leblacher and Erki Putsep. With just one more chance left to take over the sprinters' jersey, Quick.Step finally brought the break back, only to find other fresh guys jumping up the road. Leading U23 rider Philippe Gilbert attacked with 10 laps to go, and was chased by Kirk O'Bee (Navigators) and Graeme Brown (Panaria). With an average speed of 46.3 kilometres during the first hour, the riders tagged along the crowded streets of Adelaide, determined not to ease up before the race was completely over. The high temperatures and the festive feeling surrounding the race called for some water fighting, and water was soon squirted from bidons in the team cars as well as from the side of the street. An occasional bucket of water also found its way through the open windows of a certain American team's car. Soon after the King of the Mountains prize, won by Allan Davis (Team Australia), a new attack was on its way. Erki Putsep (Ag2r), Christophe Le Mevel (Credit Agricole), once again Massimo Giunti and Francesco Secchiari (Domina Vacanze), Glenn D'Hollander (Lotto-Domo), Kevin Hulsmans (Quickstep), Matthew Wilson and Bernhard Eisel (FDJeux.com), Frank Van Dulmen (Bankgiroloterij), Graeme Brown (Panaria-Margres), David McPartland (Team Australia), Ashley Humbert and Peter Dawson (United Water) worked together to build up a lead of twenty seconds. When they reached that point, Team Australia's Dave McPartland made a final attempt to gain some time on the GC, and attacked the group. He was joined by Kevin Hulsmans and the Australian champion Matt Wilson, but because of the aggressive riding behind, the groups were soon back together again. The last KOM prize of the race was taken out by McPartland ahead of Wilson and Hulsmans, shortly before the peloton regrouped once again, mainly thanks to the work of the Navigators team. Their rider Ciaran Power then attacked twice without success. The clover leafed train of FDJeux.com decided that enough was enough and sent the whole team to the front with three laps to go. A nasty crash with seven kilometres to go effectively took Aurelien Clerc and the whole Quick.Step team out of action, and top sprinters McEwen, Brown and Cooke had one less sprinter to worry about at the end of the race. During the final laps of the race, no attacks were allowed to go by the FDJeux.com boys, and as they lined up for the sprint, Baden Cooke was right where he was supposed to be. His nearest rival McEwen was closed in and had to follow Cooke's wheel for too long before he finally got out, by then unable to challenge Cooke for the win. "Until now I have been climbing really well, but I haven't exactly been awesome in the sprints," Cooke said. "I need to do a bit more of sprint training, but needless to say, I'm delighted over this win." Perhaps second placed Robbie McEwen found some consolation in the sprinters jersey he finally claimed, because he didn't look very sad when he spoke to Cyclingnews after the stage. "I'm really happy with my performance in this race. I've made all the important breaks, and I've finished in the top three on five out of six stages. My worst result in this race has been a fifth placing. I had to watch my GC placement today, as well as the Quick.Step rider (Clerc) who was equal on points with me in the points classification." In the other classifications Paolo Tiralongo (Panaria) won the mountains jersey , Philippe Gilbert (FDJeux.com) the U23, Matt Wilson (FDJeux.com) the Most Aggressive rider, and UniSA took out the Teams prize.
