A good Day for Ben; Jonker set for dream finish

Patrick Jonker (UniSA) survived a determined attack from Panaria's Giuliano Figueras and Paolo Tiralongo on Old Willunga Hill to hold onto his lead after the decisive fifth stage of the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under. Jonker finished at the back of the lead group as Australian Ben Day took an opportunistic stage win after attacking with 3 kilometres to go.

Jonker controlled his UniSA team perfectly today, using them to chase down a 10 man breakaway with less than 10 km to go before the final climb. Only one UniSA rider remained with Jonker on the climb: Luke Roberts, who paced his captain to the top just 15 seconds behind the dangerous Panaria pair.

"I don't think I would have made it without Luke today," said a happy and relieved Jonker post-race. "The whole team was fantastic. Luke did a tremendous job on Willunga Hill and the others did a tremendous job before it. I was hurting a bit because of all the attacks in the last few days. My legs weren't real fresh and I couldn't go with Figueras. I knew he was a candidate for the overall having ridden a good Giro d'Italia in the past, so I was glad to catch Figueras."

The experience of Jonker certainly counted in marshalling his UniSA team, which is composed of a mixture of professionals and amateurs. "I'm the only Tour de France rider in the team," Jonker pointed out. "I'm the captain on the road and have the experience. The others listen exactly to what I say. It's not about pedaling hard, it's about pedaling hard at the right moment."

The Dutch born, South Australian raised Jonker is riding his final race as a professional, and a win in his home town race would be something special. "I've won Route du Sud, which is the last stage race before the Tour de France, but obviously a home town win is far more important. I've raced in the Pyrenees in France and even though the competition there was heavy, for me this is the greatest thing could have happened."

Although it may look like a fairytale finish, Jonker's claim to the yellow jersey has been anything but a gift from his fellow competitors. No-one was afraid to attack the yellow jersey today...if they had it in them, but Jonker was able to answer everything. The lanky South Australian credited his positive approach to the race as to why he is currently in the lead.

"I think aggressiveness has had a lot to do with it," said Jonker who first took the yellow jersey in stage 3. "In the past I've been within 10 seconds of the win each year, so basically my sprinting ability - as you know - isn't fantastic, so I've always been 7th or 3rd. My aggressiveness on the second day was crucial. It was a gamble I know, but it was my last race and you lay it on the line. It's all or nothing, a blaze of glory or a blaze of disappointment."

Going into tomorrow's 90 kilometre circuit race in the centre of Adelaide, Jonker is confident that the race will be his. "Tomorrow isn't easy but we should be able to control it," he said. It's going to be very fast, 45 km/h average, two hours flat out racing. It'll be good for UniSA. This is a local team competing against teams with million dollar budgets. It's just really unusual for something like this to happen. I'm pretty confident now that I've seen how the team has really come up for the occasion and showed that they're able to defend the yellow jersey against world class opposition."

Day shines at the right moment

The stage honours belonged to 2003 Australian time trial champion Ben Day (Team Australia, who will ride for Division I Palmans-Collstrop this season), who attacked the leading group of 15 with three kilometres to go to hold off Robbie McEwen and Baden Cooke on the long, slightly uphill finishing straight. Thus, Day found that his luck turned around after an untimely puncture on Stage 3 cost him a place at the top of the GC.

"Some days it rains and it continues on pouring," said the philosophical but happy Day after the stage. "Today it went my way and here I am. It was a pretty long drag up to the finish into the headwind but I just kept my head down and I had my director in my ear cheering me on. I could hear my mechanic in the background as well. I thought if I stopped they'd probably kill me.

"I think [I knew I would win] when I hit the crowd with about 100 metres to go, I looked around and through the sweat in my glasses I could see the guys were a little bit of a way off and with the crowd behind me...they just pick you up and push you to that level. The adrenaline was awesome."

Like Jonker, Ben Day also profited from his aggressive riding. "You just have to take the opportunities in this sport. It's not always the strongest guy or the quickest guy who wins in cycling, that's the great thing about it. One chance in every hundred might pay off, you just have to be there."

How it unfolded

The 10 man break
Photo ©: Mark Gunter

87 riders set out from the small own of Willunga in sunny but mild conditions to fight out the fifth stage. On the menu were three laps of a 41 km circuit, taking them via the colourfully decorated Aldinga Beach and the wine making town of McLaren Vale before heading back to the start/finish. After the third lap, the race headed up Old Willunga Hill, a 3.5 kilometre climb that got steeper as it went up. After the summit it was 20 km of downhill/flat before the finish in Willunga.

After an fast, tailwind start, the day's main break was established at the 11 km mark with 10 riders establishing a steady gap over the peloton. Erki Putsep (Ag2r Prevoyance), Hans De Clercq (Lotto-Domo), Aurelien Clerc (Quick.Step-Davitamon), Nicholas Vogondy (FDJeux.com), Sergio Marinangeli (Domina Vacanze), Remco Van Der Ven and Laurens Ten Dam (Bankgiroloterij), David McPartland (Team Australia), Ryan Sullivan and Peter Dawson (United Water) swapped off turns at 60 km/h to build their lead to a maximum of 1'23 after 60 km, while UniSA, Credit Agricole and Navigators controlled the chase behind. The peloton's speed was too much for Brett Lancaster (Panaria), who suffered an asthma attack and abandoned after 23 km.

The break was potentially dangerous for Jonker, as David McPartland had started the day only 2'17 off the lead, but the South Australian kept his cool and opted leave the break in front for most of the race - not an easy task when the first lap was ridden at around 50 km/h. After the peloton passed through the feed zone in Willunga with 65 km to go, the screws started to turn and the break was gobbled up with 32 km of the stage remaining.

Tiralongo and Figueras

As predicted, the race blew apart on the climb when mountains leader Paolo Tiralongo (Panaria) and Philippe Gilbert (FDJeux.com) attacked hard at the bottom. Tiralongo's teammate Giuliano Figueras bridged up as Gilbert fell back and the two Panaria boys opened up a 10 second hap over Jonker and co. Tiralongo took the points on the climb, cementing his place as mountains leader, and he and Figueras pushed home their advantage. But Jonker was not far behind, sitting determinedly on the wheel of teammate Luke Roberts as a group of 11 more riders - including Baden Cooke and Robbie McEwen - collected around them.

Figueras and Tiralongo gave it everything to stay clear on the run into the finish, but despite gaining 24 seconds lead over the 13 chasers, they were captured with eight kilometres to go. Then as the two sprinters McEwen and Cooke were eyeing each other off for the finale, Ben Day (Team Australia) took the opportunity to attack and jumped clear with three kilometres to go, powering away into the headwind to hold them off by four seconds.

Tomorrow will see the final stage of the 2004 Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under, a 90 kilometre circuit race around Adelaide's scenic Torrens River. It should be a day for the sprinters, with Robbie McEwen, Baden Cooke, Graeme Brown and Jaan Kirsipuu fighting it out for the stage honours, while Jonker celebrates his final victory.
