Climber Cunego sprints to stage win, McGee takes back Maglia Rosa

"I still can't believe it!", enthused emerging star Damiano Cunego (Saeco) as he grabbed his sixth win of the season and his first Grand Tour stage win in Pontremoli today. "I didn't expect this result, but my teammates really believed in me...but my main job at the Giro is to help our leader Simoni. I'll enjoy my win today but my work is to help Gilberto. The Giro is three weeks long so we'll see how it goes."
The talented 22 year old from Verona, 1999 Jr. World Champion, has won six races in the past three weeks (Giro del Trentino GC and two stages, GP Larciano and GP Appennino) and today showed why Saeco just re-signed him for two years.
Gibo Simoni, Saeco's leader and defending Giro champion, seemed happy about his young teammate and indeed the entire red train's performance today. "Once we got over the climb, we rode hard for Cunego - Garzelli and Popovych could have gotten time bonuses, so we couldn't ask for a better result than this."
On the dominant effect of Saeco's red train today, Simoni explained that "we didn't attack today, we just did what we had to do to not risk anything." It's doubtful that Cunego's ascendance will hurt Simoni. To have a young, strong teammate by his side can only help Gibo in his quest for a third Giro title.

Off a perfect leadout from teammate Eddy Mazzoleni and with a great closing rush in the last 40m of the uphill sprint, Cunego came around Brad McGee - who was determined to recapture the Maglia Rosa - to win by half a bike length. The classy Sydneysider and his FDJeux.com teammate Philippe Gilbert played the game perfectly in the final and with the 12" time bonus for second place, Brad was once again pretty in pink. In his decent Italian, McGee told Italian TV that, "I'm really happy to have the (Maglia Rosa) back, but I really wanted to win today. (Cunego) was just too fast for me!"
As for the future, McGee was uncertain how long he could hold on to the jersey. "I'll give it my best try tomorrow, but since I don't know the climb, it's hard to say what will happen."
Simoni's main Giro rival Stefano Garzelli (Vini Caldirola) was looking for the stage win and his team rode hard all day today to put the classy Varesino in position to win. "We were looking to make a selection on the final climb and reduced the group to forty riders or so. Saeco did a great job today and in the final I got boxed in in the sprint. Tomorrow is the first day of truth, so to speak and we'll see who has good legs and who doesn't."
How it unfolded

On a sweet sunny spring morning in Novi Ligure, a Piemontese city know for chocolates, the Giro d'Italia embarked on Stage Two for a tough 184km run through the hilly hinterlands of Liguria and Emilia-Romana to Pontremoli, capital of the north Tuscan zone of Lunigiana.
Novi Ligure is the hometown of both Fausto Coppi and Costante Girardegno and the site of the Museo dei Campionissimi, dedicated to the greats of cycling. Earlier that morning, the spirit of Marco Pantani soared once again at this year's Giro d'Italia in a touching moment when Felice Gimondi presented one of Pantani's Bianchi bikes that he used to win the 1998 Giro d'Italia.

With a fast start at 12:25 and a regular first hour, it finally was after 36 km in Casella when 23 riders got away. By the day's first climb up the Passo della Scoffera 20km later, the big group had slimmed down to 16 riders, with some potential stage winners like Bertogliati (Saunier Duval), Bertolini (Alessio-Bianchi), Zampieri (Vini Caldirola) and Acqua e Sapone teammates Marzoli and Hamburger. But the break simply wasn't focused, as half of the riders were trying to stay away and half wanted to get to Pontremoli in the break. 4'05" was the biggest advantage they got.
With 46km to race at the Intergiro in Bedonia, Marzoli (Acqua Sapone) took the bonus while the Phonak and Gerolsteiner powered peloton began to ride hard with the Passo del Brattello just ahead. In the porcini mushroom capital of Borgo Val di Taro with 32km to race, the gap had dropped quickly and was now only 1'15".

With the chase looming behind, Colombian Luis Laverde (Formaggi Pinzolo) attacked on the first slopes of the Passo del Brattello, then Vanoti (De Nardi) and Gorazd Stangelj (Saeco) attacked too. Stangelj went by Laverde solo, and the Colombian could only follow 10" back. With 25km to go, Laverde was 10" behind, with the group at 50" and closing behind Saeco's Slovenian. The chase was fast and steady with Vini Caldirola's Steve Zampieri, who had dropped back to the group from the break, pounding on the front with teammates Tonkov and Mason. Stangelj's attack was the perfect situation for his Saeco and Simoni, who could just sit back and watch the action as Garzelli's team did the work.
With 4km to go to the summit of the climb, under Vini Caldirola's hard forcing, Petacchi went out the back and six of his Fassa Bortolo team peeled off to keep him company, as did Maglia Rosa Olaf Pollack. At 2km from the summit, Stangelj was caught as Panaria joined Caldirola on the front. Saeco then turned the tables and decided to test the others with another clever tactical move. Cunego went hard in the last kilometre up front and with Simoni on his wheel, a selection of 30 riders was quickly made. Phonak's Alexandre Moos took the GPM points and on the fast, twisting descent to Vignola before the finish in Pontremoli.

In the front group, all the GC candidates were there; Simoni, Garzelli, Popovych and fast men like Rebellin were riding all out to maintain their 1'00 advantage on the gruppo Maglia Rosa, which included Alessandro Petacchi. Up front, Saeco's red train kept driving hard with big Eddy Mazzoleni up front, stretching the front group into one long Indian file. With 10 km to go, Slovenian champion Valjavec (Phonak) had a mechanical, dropping back to join World Champ Astarloa (Lampre) and seven others including Fred Rodriguez (Aqua Sapone), who were chasing hard at 15", with the group Maglia Rosa at 1'30".
With 5km to go, Astarloa joined the front group with Valjavec. There were now 40 riders in front, which was going all out. Saeco's red train powered away, making it difficult for any the fast men to make it to the front.
As the last kilometre started, Saeco was massed at the front, but after the sharp left hander and up and down section, Gilbert (FDJeux.com) started the leadout for McGee. With 250m to go, Brad hit the front on the slight uphill finish, but Cunego got by him in the final meters for the win. Fast closing Cristian Moreni (Alessio-Bianchi) was third, with World Champion Igor Astarloa (Lampre) once again burned by his former teammate Cunego in fourth.
Stage 3 - May 11: Pontremoli-Corno alle Scale,191km
Cloudy, cool weather with a possibility of rain showers is forecast for Tuesday, another day on the beautiful winding mountain roads of northern Tuscany through Lunigiana, Garfagnana, and then to the Giro's first mountaintop stage finish atop the steep Corno alle Scale climb. With Saeco HQ just down the road in Gaggio Montano, Gibo Simoni and his red Saeco train will be looking for an early stage win here.
Will Saeco to play their Cunego card here to put pressure on Simoni's rivals like Garzelli and Popovych? Or is it too soon for Saeco to take the Maglia Rosa in this year's Giro? Davide Rebellin may be able to profit from the situation and take the Maglia Rosa, and Popovych, currently sitting second on GC may have a shot at the prestigious pink tunic as well. Stage 3 won't decide the final of this year's Giro, but it will probably show who isn't going to win.
