90th Tour de France - July 5-27, 2003Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 16 - Wednesday, July 23: Pau - Bayonne, 197.5 kmSuper solo flight by Tyler to win Stage 16
Saturday's TT battle likely to decide final podium spotBy Tim Maloney, European editor in Bayonne "Magnifique" was what France Television called Tyler Hamilton's solo adventure across the misty landscape of the French Pays Basque today, as The Man From Marblehead went on a 90 km plus solo break on Stage 16 from Pau to Bayonne to win his first Tour de France stage. "To win a stage at the Tour is fantastic", said Hamilton, who has struggled this Tour with a cracked right collarbone. "Up until today, I've been a little disappointed... this morning I was still seventh on GC and under the circumstances I'd done a respectable Tour so far. But I knew that without the injury, I could have been in a better position. After today, I'll be able to forget about the disappointment. It's great for me and great for the team. I'm extremely happy." Wednesday's effort was reminiscent of his Paris-Nice Stage 6 solo flight from Toulon-Cannes in March, where Tyler was away for 101km and sewed up the Paris-Nice climbing jersey. Hamilton's win saw the first ever back to back stage victories by (different) Americans, as his Girona, Spain neighbour and former teammate Lance Armstrong had won Stage 15 on Monday. "I'm exhausted; I gave it everything out there today", said Hamilton. "My shoulder isn't one hundred percent yet. It's sore and I have to sleep on my back. I'm kind of getting sick of it... but I feel like it's becoming stronger and I can pull on the handlebars now but I still favour it a little bit so I feel a bit awkward when I'm standing up." But Hamilton didn't look at all awkward today as he powered across the verdant terrain decorated with political slogans for a free Basque region. Driving behind Hamilton all day in the CSC team car was master motivator Bjarne Riis, who had kept Tyler going since his Stage 1 crash. "Today was a full mountain stage and a lot of people didn't think there would big differences today," Hamilton explained. "Bjarne reminded of us of the stage in 1996 to Jaca after Hautacam, where the last 100km were flat and he put eight minutes into Indurain and Rominger. So Riis reminded us that we've had a good race so far and to not lose our focus. A lot of people are thinking about Paris now and when you do that, you can lose a little bit of focus." Hamilton almost didn't make his winning move due to lack of focus as Stage 16 started. After only 10km, Hamilton made "a big, big mistake" he was caught on the wrong side of a split after the first Cat. 4 climb of the day. "I was just too far back and had to call for help." Riis sent four CSC teammates back to get Hamilton across to the front group. "I felt terrible for having those guys come back; they had to really dig deep and paid the price for that effort." Once Tyler was safely back in the peloton and the day's break of 17 had gotten up the road, Hamilton felt he had to pay his guys back for getting him back in the race. When Hamilton hit the first slopes of the Col de Soudet, the CSC rider exploded out of the peloton like 4th of July fireworks up the steep slope to bridge up the break in 10km. "I have to dedicate today's victory to my teammates. Without their help, I wouldn't have won for sure and I apologise (to them) for my mistake." Awaiting Hamilton in the break was his CSC teammate, Danish champion Nicki Sørensen, who told Cyclingnews, "Our plan went perfectly today. When I got in the early break, I knew he was coming up so I waited. Tyler was so strong and it was incredible how fast he went in the last 50km." CSC team director Johnny Weltz echoed Sørensen's sentiments, joking, "It was hard to have a strategy where Tyler could ride solo from the bottom of a climb for 50km with a headwind from the Atlantic Ocean!" After the stage, Maillot Jaune Lance Armstrong congratulated Tyler and his wife Haven with hugs and smiles, saying of Stage 16, "Today wasn't an easy day at all with the Soudet and the Col de Bargarguy. The US Postal team was incredible today; especially the job George Hincapie did on the Bargarguy. We were able to control things today but it wasn't easy with the humid weather." With his great ride today, Hamilton held off the fast closing peloton led by Telekom and Quickstep. Italian champ Paolo Bettini told Cyclingnews, "I was trying for win today, but there was nothing to do against the great ride by Hamilton. So now I'm looking for a big day on Sunday in Paris." Hamilton jumped over Ivan Basso (Fassa Bortolo) on the GC to sixth, 6'35" behind Armstrong, but only 1'19" out of fourth place. Hamilton ought to pull that margin back from current fourth place Haimar Zubeldia (Euskaltel-Euskadi) in Saturday's time trial and could have an outside chance of riding onto the Tour de France podium to snatch third place from Alex Vinokourov (Telekom). 3'50" separate the American from the tough Kazakh rider, which means that Hamilton will have to pull back almost 5" per kilometre from Vino. After his superb solo performance today, don't count out Tyler Hamilton to give his courageous all in Saturday's dramatic time test showdown. How it unfoldedCool and misty conditions again greeted the riders as they left Pau for the final mountain stage of the Tour. The attacks started immediately the flag dropped and the peloton was already strung out over the top of the first climb, the Côte Des Crêts after 10 km, with Tyler Hamilton caught behind in a split and having to chase back on with the help of his teammates. David Millar (Cofidis) attacked on the descent together with Paolo Bettini, who dropped back after having bike problems. Millar was caught after 30 km, and a counter attack went with Finot and Dumoulin (Delatour), Fornaciari (Saeco), Moerenhout (Lotto-Domo), Van de Wouwer (Quick.Step), Gonzalez de Galdeano (ONCE), Chavanel (Brioches), Turpin (Ag2r), Wauters (Rabobank), Mercado (iBanesto), Sorensen (CSC), Casar (FDJ), Latasa (Kelme), Miholjevic (Alessio) and Clain (Cofidis). Millar managed to bridge up to the group with the help of teammate Inigo Cuetas (Cofidis), and there were now 17 riders in front at the foot of the Col du Soudet (km 53). Tyler Hamilton followed an attack by Mario Aerts and Roberto Laiseka on this steep climb, riding away from them and closing the three minute gap to the Millar group before the summit of the Soudet. Over the top, a group of 10 riders formed, with Hamilton and Sorensen there, along with Mercado, Wauters, Casar, Latasa, Van De Wouwer, Miholjevic and Millar. On the next climb, the Col de Bagargui (km 110), Hamilton left his companions for good and, armed with a 4 minute lead, soloed his way to the finish in Bayonne. Erik Zabel was the best sprinter to make it over the climbs in the peloton, and took second place in the stage, after his Telekom team did everything it could to try and chase down Hamilton. Stage 17 - Thursday July 24: Dax-Bordeaux, 181kmIt's a likely to be a long slog north through the flat piney woods of Les Landes on the way to wine capital Bordeaux, the traditional appointment for sprinters and another original stage stop for the 1903 Tour. At least the heat has broken so temps will be in the upper 20's with partly cloudy skies. With 1999 stage winner Tom Steels absent from this edition of the Tour, Aussies Baden Cooke and Robbie McEwen will be renewing their ding-dong battle for the Maillot Vert. Watch Erik Zabel and Roman Vainsteins, who will be strong factors in any sprint finish. PhotographyImages by Jonathan Devich/Cyclingnews.com, epicimages.us
