O'Grady takes first win
Aussie champ back in top form

Australian Road Champion Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) finally came up trumps with a convincing sprint victory on stage six of the LTdL in Cukai this afternoon.
"The nationals, which I won, and the Tour Down Under, where I placed third, took a lot out of me and I arrived in Malaysia feeling a bit jaded," began O'Grady. "But I've been feeling better with each new day and yesterday I felt like I was right back on top form so I was well ready to go for a win today. I can't remember the last time I won a bunch sprint, so that made the result especially satisfying."

However, for many, the real hero of the day was the 29 year old Japanese rider Koji Fukushima who has been in the thick of the action ever since the tour started on the island of Langkawi six days ago.
What makes it all even more remarkable is that Fukushima lost his girlfriend to cancer less than two months ago: "My morale was very low at the start of the tour but I have been determined to do a good ride for my team," said Fukushima.
Nathan O'Neill, the Aussie representing the Saturn team, continues to dominate proceedings in the Telekom Malaysia le Tour de Langkawi, retaining the leader's jersey for the sixth day in succession.
How it unfolded

While the classification shows Fukushima in fourth last place, the overall standings bear little relationship to the story of the stage which saw the Japanese rider launch attack after attack, commencing with a breakaway effort after just one kilometre of racing with Tommy Evans of Telekom Malaysia.
He was to the fore again at 2.5km and again at 18km, the elastic to the peloton finally snapping when he finally broke clear with Palmans-Colstrop rider Peter Wuyts. The well-matched duo soon settled down to a determined breakaway effort, and the two rode courageously for well over 100 kilometres, creating the most nail-biting finish of the LTdL so far.
What makes their achievement all the more remarkable is not just the fact that their break was the longest of the Tour so far at 118 kilometres, but the average speed for the stage was a blistering 47.90km/h (29.79mph).

At 15 kilometres to go and their lead still hovering at two minutes, a shock result appeared quite likely. However, the pace was so high in the final kilometres a number of riders began to lose contact, and the sprinters' teams did just enough to mow down the duo of Fukushima and Wuyts.
With just 700 metres to go, the bunch was once again all together. A technical finish meant the odds were looking good for the crafty Australian sprinter Stuart O'Grady, who powered past a fading Graeme Brown with ample of time to salute the applauding Cukai crowd.
"I knew there were two sharp corners to be tackled in the last kilometre," explained O'Grady about his run-in to the finish.
"That gave me confidence as I'm at my best in a more technical kind of sprint where bike handling counts as much as power, and I placed myself just right to come round the Panaria boys down the finishing straight."

The Saturn team must be feeling pleased too: after riding hard all day on the flat run along the coast road from Marang in defence of Aussie Nathan O'Neill's overall race leadership, they now hold the first three places overall, with American riders Tom Danielson (USA) and Eric Wohlberg (Canada).
They can't be too complacent though; right behind them in fourth and fifth place are the two Colombian riders, Hernan Dario Munoz and Freddy Gonzalez, from Colombia-Selle Italia.
Mountains leader Roland Green was perhaps the most unfortunate of the day, puncturing with 17km left to go. In typical fashion, the entire Canadian team dropped off the pace to wait for their leader, but with the pace at 76km/h according to Julian Winn of Team Fakta, no-one was getting back on without the aid of a rocket, and so Green finished some 1min 29sec behind stage winner O'Grady.
"At least I have a chance of making back that time on the Genting Stage," said an optimistic Green.
