Stage 5 - February 4: Kota Bharu - Kuala Terengganu, 179.1 km

Brownie gives it some go-go

After two seconds and one third, Graeme Brown (Panaria-Fiordo) deservedly won his first stage in front of a packed crowd at the seaside town of Kuala Terengganu today.

"The plan for the finish was to take a no holds barred approach," said the sprint sensation from Sydney.

"The team was supposed to set things up from the two kilometre mark, although it didn't quite work out that way. But as we entered the last kilometre, it all came together for us and our Panaria train lined out on the front and turned the pace up so high that nobody could come around us.

"Sergiy Matveyev and Brett Lancaster did a fantastic job, and when I judged it was time to go, I yelled for them to peel off and went flat out for the line."

Asked about his relations with his Brazilian arch rival Pagliarini, he said: "It's all in the past. As far as I am I am concerned the matter is closed. There's a race in progress."

The first week of the Le Tour de Langkawi has predictably turned into a sprinters paradise. Not even 35 kilometres of climbing could disturb the overall classification yesterday, so with just one Cat. 4 climb 38.6 kilometres from the finish in today's stage, chances of a bunch sprint were more than likely.

In one of the fastest stages so far (an average of 44.8km/h), a brisk start negated any chances of a breakaway before a three man escape went away after 47 kilometres. The trio - Jose Manuel Maestre (Colchon Relax-Fuenlabrada), Fortunato Baliani (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave') and Charles Guilbert (Marlux-Ville De Charlerois) - worked in perfect harmony, swapping off turns for over 100 kilometres before the chase began in earnest.

Led first by Saturn, the sprinters' teams of Graeme Brown, Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre), Andrus Aug (De Nardi-Colpack) and Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) collaborated in the final 20 kilometres to severe any chances of a successful breakaway, and with seven kilometres remaining, the curtains were raised for a massive bunch gallop.

At at the one kilometre to go banner, it was the Panaria-Fiordo lead-out men who were clearly the best organised. Brett Lancaster and Sergiy Matveyev once again did their job to absolute perfection, and this time, so did Graeme Brown, coming off Lancaster's wheel with 70 metres to go and hurtled to the line.

Not even triple stage winner Luciano Pagliarini could touch Brown today - the fire in his belly was burning bright, so with afterburners blazing, the Panaria-Fiordo rider cruised past the line with arms aloft, more than two bike lengths ahead of teammate Bongiorno and Simone Cadamuro (De Nardi-Colpack).

With 127 out of 129 riders all coming in at the same time, Nathan O'Neill (Saturn) keeps his leader's jersey for another day.

"We had a pretty good grip on things again today," said O'Neill. "Though we did get a bit worried because the lead was not tumbling quite as quickly as we would have liked [in the last 30 kilometres]."

Speaking about the race strategy in the days leading to Genting, O'Neill said: "We're being realistic. My lead is very narrow but I reckon we can hold the yellow jersey as far as Genting without too much trouble. Then we will just have to wait and see how it works out."

How it unfolded

An aura of calm

Despite tensions flaring at the conclusion of yesterday's stage in Tanah Merah, an aura of calm was evident in the coastal village of Kota Bharu today, the start town for the fifth stage in the LTdL.

129 riders meandered their way through a 7.7km neutral zone under slightly overcast conditions, the typical Malay humidity prevailing. A leg sapping parcours the previous day appeared to have dulled any long breakaway attempts save three riders, the peloton at this stage more than content to let them go.

Not surprising then that the trio - Jose Manuel Maestre (Colchon Relax-Fuenlabrada), Fortunato Baliani (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave') and Charles Guilbert (Marlux-Ville De Charlerois) - soon built a solid lead shortly after their escape at the 47 kilometre mark. 20 kilometres later, their advantage was 2:55, and at kilometre 97, their lead was a healthy 4:24.

Conditions were perfect for a breakaway: little to no wind, and warm but not stifling temperatures - coupled with the general ambience within the peloton which mirrored the insouciant mood of the cows and water buffalos en route to Kuala Terrengganu.

15 kilometres earlier, Allan Bo Andresen (Team fakta) and Koji Fukushima (Japan) - the latter one of the most aggressive riders since the start of the LTdL - left the confines of the peloton in an attempt to bridge the gap to Maestre and co.

However, there was still plenty of HP coming from the three pairs of pistons out in front - especially Jose Manuel Maestre with his doubly long turns - and the duo's mild impression on the lead group was never enough for the three to consider waiting for Andresen and Fukushima to catch up. And just as a century of kilometres was covered, the two chasers were caught, leaving just two groups on the road.

Maestre, Baliani and Guilbert continued to forge ahead as they wound their way down the east coast of the mainland, and by the Cat. 4 climb of Kg Sungai Tong (140.5km covered / 38.6km to go), these early escapees still had a lead of almost three minutes.

With 20 kilometres remaining, the onus was now on Lampre, Panaria-Fiordo, Credit Agricole and Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave' to take up the chase for their sprinters after some very solid tempo riding from Saturn over the previous 40 kilometres.

Three k's later, the sprinters' teams began doing exactly that, and within the space of 10 kilometres, the stage was set once again for a 70km/h Pagliarini-Brown-O'Grady-Di Biase showdown.

Along the finishing straight in the town of Kuala Terengganu, it was the orange and navy clad boys from Panaria-Fiordo who were best organised, with Graeme Brown shooting out from the slipstream of his friend and teammate Brett Lancaster with less than 100 to go. It was a beautiful sight to see as Brownie turned his 11 cog so much faster than the rest, outsprinting teammate Ruben Bongiorno and Simone Cadamuro (De Nardi-Colpack) by a massive margin.

"I'm hopeful of winning some more sprints," said Brown, brimming with confidence. "Bruno [Reverberi] says he's looking for another two stage victories from us, so we shall see how it pans out in the next few days."

A look down the finishing list reveals triple stage winner Luciano Pagliarini in a lowly 31st place on a stage many thought he would win. “There was a bit of a twist to the course on the run-in, and my boys took the wrong line and lost their place in the peloton, so it put us out of the running,” said Pagliarini.

Brown posts comfortable stage five win

Sydney's Graeme Brown (Ceramiche Panaria Fiordo) yesterday boasted he would win the fifth stage of the Tour de Langkawi and today he was true to his word. Brown sprinted across the line at the end of the 179 kilometer stage from Kota Bharu to Kuala Terengganu on the north east coast of the Malay Peninsula in a time of 4.01.37, two bike lengths clear of his team mate Argentinian Ruben Bongiorno with Italian Simone Cadamuro (de Nardi Colpack) third.

"The plan today was 'no holds barred' and just go for the win," said Brown who, unlike yesterday when it went without him, was on the tail of his team's four strong lead out train according to plan. "Matveyev and Lancaster did a perfect job and no-one could really come past us because the train was so strong."

"I just finished it off and we're all really happy with it," said an elated Brown who was second on stage two and protested that Brazilian Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre) had blocked his run at the line. On Sunday Brown was third but had no complaints about Pagliarini and yesterday he almost came to blows with the Brazilian who clinched his hat trick by the slimmest of winning margins over Brown.

Pagliarini accused Brown of swinging in front of him after the finish but Brown explained he was avoiding the photographers massed on the road.

Brown's victory today also put him on top of the green jersey points competition with 58 points, nine clear of South Australian Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) who finished eighth on today's stage. The overnight point's leader, Pagliarini has dropped to fourth 13 points behind Brown.

Today Pagliarini, who placed 31st on the stage, was one of the first to come up and congratulate the brash Australian.

"I've been a bit unfortunate in the last few days with the past green jersey (Pagliarini)," said Brown of the bad blood between the pair. "We've had a few problems but yesterday is yesterday and today's today and what was in the past stays in the past."

"I hope it all turns out alright between us in future," he added.

Today was the first sprint finish without a crash but there was some confusion when the fast moving field of 129 riders had to negotiate a tricky right hand turn three kilometers from home. A split median strip in the middle of the turn scattered the bunch and not all the teams were able to reorganise for the sprint.

"I just kept on Brett's wheel and he kept on Sergey's wheel," said Brown whose face was a picture of grim determination in the final five kilometres. "When I thought it was time I just yelled at them to go and they just kept going and going flicking it down more gears."

Brown then accelerated ahead, throwing his arms in the air in a victory salute well before the line to emphasise the ease of his win.

Today's victory brings Brown's Tour de Langkawi stage tally to three after his two wins last year and the reigning world record holder in the teams pursuit says it is just the start.

"My team director wants another couple and if we can do again what we did today then I've definitely got the speed to pull it off," said Brown. "We'll see how it goes."

One person who would be more than happy to see the Panaria rider challenging for another bunch sprint win is Queensland's Nathan O'Neill (Saturn), who has held the overall lead since his decisive win in the opening stage time-trial on Langkawi Island.

"Realistically, the lead we have is pretty slender but we'd like to see the sprinters (contesting the) finish until Genting (Saturday's tough mountain stage) where the race will be decided," explained O'Neill who after five days and 679 kilometers of racing in the ten day, 1343 kilometer event sits at the top of the general classification, 20 seconds clear of 2002 World Mountain Bike Champion, Roland Green of Canada. "We're happy to control the race the same way it's been going and Panaria has proved today they have some form as well so hopefully there will be some helping hands tomorrow for the finish."

Today's stage was pretty much a repeat of the last three stages several small breakaway groups heading off the front of the field only to be reeled in again. Saturn rode tempo on the front of the main bunch to protect O'Neill's lead but the yellow jersey wearer surged to the front himself with ten kilometers to go in a bid to close down the gap to a lead group of three riders, Jose Manuel Maestre (Relax Fuenlabrada), Charles Guilbert (Marlux Wincor) and Fortunato Balliani (Formaggi Piazolo).

"It was a little bit nail biting towards the finish because the (time) gaps were coming down but they weren't tumbling down so we had to bring up a few more guys up the front to make sure we bought it back," said O'Neill. Eight kilometers from the finish, the breakaways were caught and the battle for sprint positions began.

"I stayed out of trouble and sat out to one side," said O'Neill who crashed in the final kilometers on Stage Two and narrowly avoided hitting the bitumen again on Stages Three and Four. "It was pretty strung out and pretty hairy a couple of times especially that one corner (three kilometers from line), but really no problems today."
