Queenslander Robbie McEwen (Crown) knows the tempo of a bike race, that's
why he's No. 4 in the world and holds the Tour de France sprinter's Green Jersey.
He showed his cycling intuition when he watched a breakaway go clear at the
halfway mark of the one hour final criterium stage of the Jayco Geelong Bay
Cycling Classic, outside Melbourne's Crown Entertainment Complex today.
NSW rider Chris Sutton led a four-rider lead group that eventually lapped
the rest of the field, including McEwen, leaving the likes of Stuart O'Grady
(Skilled) and Gregg Henderson (SBR-Colnago) chasing.
"I kept watching Brett Aitken who was the only one who could beat me, but
when he didn't go, I held back. I have other races to worry about," said a confident
McEwen. "It became a matter of accepting the win, not trying to prove anything."

Sutton was ecstatic at his final stage win , citing the chance to "strut his
stuff" before the biggest crowd of the Classic, numbering more than 10,000.
Henderson, who had already notched up the sprint title, also decided that
enough was enough and although he was in the chasing pack, did not go on.
McEwen has now won five Classics over the last eight years and promised to
defend his title again next year.

The women's race saw victory to NSW rider Margaret Hemsley, showing her best
form since the crash at the Commonwealth Games that tragically took the Gold
from her. Hemsley attacked solo to take the win, with Kate Bates leading home
the bunch sprint for second in front of Katie Mactier.
The overall series winner was Kate Bates, who almost from day one stamped
her authority on the race, as teammate and last year's winner Rochelle Gilmore
could not maintain her normal high standards, withdrawing on day two half way
through the race because of ill health, and again withdrawing on the last day
during the race.
The sprint title went to Queenslander Olivia Gollan.
