It took a new Commonwealth Games record by Sarah Ulmer (NZL) for her to defeat Australia's Kate Bates and take gold in the Women's 3,000m pursuit in Manchester on Friday August 2nd.

Although Bates started the better of the two, Ulmer inched her way back to go slightly ahead and then stretch her lead, lap by lap, to win in the new record time of 3:32.467 to Bates's 3:34.193.

In the ride off for the bronze Alison Wright (Aus) started faster than Emma Davies (England) but Davies started to fight back. Unable to sustain her effort, Davies fell behind by just over a second at half distance and this ran to 1.2 seconds. Davies finally pulled all the stops out in a spirited finish pulling back half of the deficit. Time ran out for the 23-year-old English girl and she had to be content with fourth.
