Manchester 2002 Commonwealth GamesManchester, England, July 27 - August 3, 2002Main Page Results Previous Event Next Event July 31 - Men's Sprint, National Cycling CentreBayley wins by narrowest of marginsBy Gerry McManus, Cyclingnews correspondent in Manchester In a thrilling all-Australian showdown, Ryan Bayley narrowly defeated Sean Eadie by a tyre width to take the gold in the Commonwealth Games track sprint competition. They set off in the deciding match C with one win each and the slow start saw a cat and mouse game being played as the speed slowly increased. Eadie, sporting a Rasputin style beard, had started as lead-man but Bayley took the initiative by taking the front. In the final lap as they approached top speed, Eadie held the inside line and it looked as if Bayley would miss out. In his final effort, Bayley burst down the finishing straight and lifted his wheel as they crossed the line, inseparable to the naked eye. It took the photo-finish camera to split the pair. Earlier Bayley had beaten sprint newcomer Jamie Staff (England) in the semi-final. Jobie Dajka (Aus) came from his semi defeat by Eadie to beat Staff in the bronze medal match.
