McGee in the record books

By Gerry McManus, Cyclingnews correspondent in Manchester

Australia's Brad McGee went further into the Commonwealth games record books by taking his third consecutive gold medal in the 4,000m individual pursuit.

In the final ride-off, he faced his FDJeux.com teammate Bradley Wiggins (Eng) on the track in Manchester. From the outset, despite finishing the gruelling Tour De France at the weekend, he showed that he still had a great turn of speed and led from the first lap. At 2,000m he had over two seconds in hand and had Wiggins in his sights after 3,000m.

McGee punched the air as he realised he was winning the gold and with the crowd realising that they were perhaps watching another record falling, they generously cheered him on past his tiring opponent.

The Australian put the hammer down again to finish in a new CWG record time of 4:16.358, one of the fastest of all time.

In the earlier ride-off for the third podium spot, England's Paul Manning beat Luke Roberts (Australia) to take the bronze. The 27-year-old is the current British champion for the event and is a local lad from nearby Stockport in Cheshire.
