Gutierrez gets the stage
Bartoli, Frattini and Zarrabeitia make the most of a messy finale

Unlike much of Europe – which seems to be under water – the sun was shining bright in Burgos today and while Gutierrez took a smart stage victory it was primarily Bartoli, Frattini and Zarrabeitia that made hay while the sun shone.
Although today's stage included three categorised climbs it was marked on paper, as was yesterday, as another day for the sprinters. After their failure to take advantage of yersterday's flat course the speedsters among the Burgos peloton were surely out to ensure some action today. However their eagerness may have been a factor in the crash that saw the field split to pieces just five kilometres before the arrival in Miranda de Ebro and in the final it was Banesto's Canatabrian Jose Ivan Gutierrez who managed the stage win by leaving the other members of the head group of sixteen behind a couple of kilometres from the end.
Gutierrez's run for the line gave him the stage and among his immediate pursuers Bartoli, Frattini and Zarrabeitia made the most of their luck. However the escape of the day was initiated at around the 25 kilometre mark and lasted for a total of 140 kilometres.
Close to the first meta volante of the day, Alessio's Alessandro Bertolini and Saeco's Austrian, Gerrit Glomser escaped. Working well in tandem they built up a ten minute lead across the following two climbs. After the descent of the Portillo de Busto into the stony walled valley of the Ebro river the peloton, led primarily by ONCE and Relax began to hunt down the escapees. The gap fell rapidly as the race snaked along the banks of the river and out into the fields before the city of Miranda de Ebro, with Bertolini taking every opportunity to stretch his legs and lower back. Finally with seven kilometres to go , the brave and weary pair were neutralised.
The next move was by Alessio's Frattini who was followed by the hardworking Flecha (Banesto) and they opened up a small gap across the open, wind-swept fields on the edge of the city. That gap would keep them out of the trouble to come and ensure their finish at the front of the race. Just as Frattini and Flecha had cleared the 5 kilometre banner there was a fall towards the front centre of the pursuing peloton. As riders fell under the shade of a solitary tree and the banner announcing their imminent arrival at the finish three quarters of the peloton were left trying to put their bodies and bikes together or searching for a route around the entanglement.
While many were still in recovery mode back under the tree, Bartoli, Velo, Zarrabeitia, Hruska, Gutierrez, and a gang of others had caught Frattini and Flecha and were making the best of the disappearance of the grand peloton. Zarra was the first to give it a go when he attacked his 15 companions and tried to hasten their journey to the finish. In the lull as Zarra was caught Gutierrez tried his hand from the back of the group and quickly opened up a small but significant gap of no more than three seconds. He settled into time trial mode with fingers over the top of his ergo levers and his wrists relaxed back over the top of his bars. The others despite the efforts of Hruska and Zarra to get things moving were not organised in their pursuit of the Cantabrian, who as a result was able hold steady the gap all the way into Miranda de Ebro.
Commesso led the chasers in, five seconds behind Gutierrez thus giving Bartoli, Frattini and Zarrabeitia the top three places on GC. Some of the less fortunate of the day were last year's man, Juan Mercado (iBanesto.com), who lost 16 seconds and Roberto Heras (US Postal), who lost 1.48. But even greater losses were suffered by Camezind (5.19), Casagrande (5.40) and 2000 winner Leonardo Piepoli who had to climb in to the team car as the race was finishing ahead of him – he has some suspicious collar bone problems.
In the end today's crash shook up the leader board a little more, with some of the contenders from yesterday's break losing their places. More sorting of the wheat from the chaff can be expected tomorrow with the result of the 17.9km team time trial having the potential to open up some more windows before the queen stage and mountain top finish on Thursday.
