Stage 1 - August 12: Burgos - Medina de Pomar, 155km
Phonak Grabs(ch) the lead

Germany's Bert Grabsch became the premier leader of this year's edition of the Vuelta Burgos when he outsprinted a star-studded breakaway in Medina de Pomar today. The decisive break, one of a number that characterised what was meant to be a day for the sprinters, came with a little less than 10 kilometres to go when Fassa Bortolo's Marco Velo towed teammate Michele Bartoli away from a recently reformed peloton. The two were pursued and soon after a group of 11 were away building time on the peloton and managed to hold a gap of 19 seconds at the end.
Earlier the day had started slowly and the only excitement came as a result of the escape of José Iván Gutiérrez (iBanesto.com) and Daniel Schnider (Phonak). The two were allowed a sizeable advantage - at one point six minutes, before being reeled in two thirds of the way through the stage. It was here that the wind commenced to take its toll and the race split into two groups with a large number of riders managing to put themselves over 20 seconds ahead of a nervous Banesto-led bunch.
The break was of such a size that for some time it appeared as if the race possessed two pelotons, the only difference being one was dominated totally at the front by Banesto, who fought the elements to get their man, and last year's winner, Juan Miguel Mercado, back to the head of the race. When Lotto and De Nardi decided to share the toil with Banesto the gap started to reduce, nobody else seemed interested in chasing as most everyone else was well represented up front. At the front an animated Alberto Martinez (Euskaltel) tried in vain to keep some coordination so that they could remain away.
With the joining of the two groups Zarrabeitia and a few others tried to keep things going, no sooner were they brought into the fold and another went away. This time it was one of the De Nardi riders that held out to the last. He was brought back with around ten kilometres to go and after a respectable pause, Velo launched Bartoli off the front. Within the blink of an eye an eleven-man group was up the road and pulling away from the peloton. Among the group were four ONCE riders, Hruska, Nozal, Andrle and team leader Zarra, Velo and Bartoli for Fassa, Camenzind for Phonak and Saeco's returned Simoni. Nevertheless in the end it was Camenzind's teammate, Grabsch who took the sprint from Bartoli and in so doing gained him the first day race lead.
Tomorrow's stage covers 172 kilometres from Frias to Miranda de Ebro and although it is marked as another day for the sprinters on paper it includes three principal difficulties, the Alto del Cristo, (Cat.3), el Altotero, (Cat. 1) and the Portillo de Busto, (Cat. 2). The final climb, the Portillo de Busto peaks 52 kilometres from the finish giving the non-climbers some chance of a chase into Miranda de Ebro.
Today's chase by Banesto showed that they aim to give Mercado his third vuelta of the season and to repeat his victory here of last year. But ONCE's ability to place four men in the final break may create some problems for the Banesto plan.
If they can hold it tomorrow, the advantage created by the four ONCE riders may prove very useful on Wednesday's third stage a short but snappy 18 kilometre team time trial. It would then be a matter of holding it through the mountain top finish on Thursday. But with riders of the class of Camenzind, Simoni and Bartoli all at the top of the classification after today, Banesto will have more than just the neighbours to consider.
