Iron Hill twilight criterium

West Chester Cycling Classic, PA, June 26, 2006

Iron Hill criterium showcases top cyclists

(West Chester, PA) - June 26, 2006 - Professional cycling returned to the streets of downtown West Chester on Saturday, June 17, 2006 for the second annual Iron Hill Twilight Criterium.

An estimated crowd of 7,000 filled the streets of West Chester to watch amateur, elite women and pro men race the .62 mile circuit that started & finished in front of title sponsor Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant.

A field of nearly 30 women contested the 40-lap Elite Women’s event. The action was fast & furious from the start, with Colavita/Sutter Home’s Ashley Kimmet, returning to the race for the second year for another victory at the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. Erica Allar of Team Fuji and Kim Geist of Victory Cycling took the second and third places.

The featured Pro Men race took to the streets of West Chester in a 60-lap battle royal. The 100-man starting field, included such teams as Colavita/Sutter Home, Toyota-United, AEG-Toshiba-JetNetWork, Tri-State Velo and local team Alliance Environmental. Early in the race Stephan Steinweg of SC Bergen broke away with unbelievable speed ultimately leading the pack by a full lap. With a prime contested nearly every other lap, the race was on. Steinweg kept to the peloton as top performers continued to breakaway during the high speed race. Kyle Wamsley and Sebastian Alexander of Colavita/Sutter Home, James Carney of Alliance Environmental and Emile Abraham of AEG/Toshiba/JetNetWork ultimately crossed the finish line for the top five finishes.

Besides the spotlighted Pro Men’s and Elite Women’s races, the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium included a race for amateur racers. Approximately 75 category 3 and 4 riders including teams from Cadence Cycling, East Coast Velo, Technocycle and the hometown West Chester Cycling Club/Iron Hill Brewery team raced the 30 lap challenge. The day also featured a Kids’ Sprint sponsored by the Chester County Hospital that drew over 100 young competitors.
