Perfect racing conditions greeted the 14 riders for this week’s criterium held at Monash. The heat of the day showed no signs of slowing down the competitors for their graded criteriums with two of our latest club members Aron and Wayne Woosnam, taking out the win for the C and D Grade competition.

B Grade’s line up changed slightly for Tuesday night’s racing, Chris Stevens, Brenton Woon and Peter Weston seemed happy to make it a handicap ‘friendly’ race deciding to roll down the final straight. Although many thought they had missed the bell, the group obviously chose to take it easy on each other and enjoy the slower pace.

Ruth Strout and Angelo Ylia worked well as a team to keep the newer club members together for their 35 minutes of racing. It was a perfect night for the less experienced racers to learn a few tips and conserve some energy. Unfortunately for Ruth and Angelo, Aron Woosnam and Michael Anderson had quite a lot in reserve, taking out the top two positions for the night.

Wayne Woosnam had a convincing win over fellow D Graders Gordon Lawton and Kade Boase. Lawton almost claimed second place after making a mad dash to the line behind a stunned Boase.

A Grade pushed hard from the start, Angus Boase fell victim to the high pace with Matthew Benson to follow at about the 38minute mark. Hamish MacKirdy and Lee Stevens kept the pressure up until the last few laps where they tried to conserve energy for the bell. It was a surprising finish for Stevens who claimed first place with a clear bike length between him and second place MacKirdy.

The criterium may be over for this week but the races to follow should be exciting with competition for cyclists of any level. Sunday’s road race will be held at Loveday from 8:45 followed on Tuesday with the Graded Criterium at Monash.
