Marconi CC

Anthony Rappo Memorial, November 26, 2006

The weather was kind to us, with cloudy conditions keeping the predicted high temperatures at bay. Numbers were down this year especially in the C & E Grades, numbers a little better in D Grade. However, the racing was still competitive.

The Junior handicap was well graded by Gil Carver, with the first 3 place getters crossing the line hands in the air for a dead heat. Just lucky the commissaires were being kind on the day & they only had a talking to for coming across the line with no hands on the bars. I don't think they will be doing that again in a hurry.

A & B Grades around 30 riders each. It was good to see a decent A Grade field from comments going around, they put on a bit of a show for the crowd. The main bunch however let 3 riders getaway in the final 4 laps to take the top placings. Even having some Pro riders in the bunch did scare the riders. Hopefully Willo will be back next year with a few more team mates.

The 3 breakaways consisted of 2 Marconi riders David Rae & Dean Mercurio as well as Tuesday night regular Clayton Butler of Macarthur. These 3 riders using their course knowledge kept the main field at bay. Unfortunately for Clayton he was outnumbered when it came down to the sprint.

It took a while, but, Marconi finally notched up a win in A Grade. David has had a long season, competing recently in New Zealands national championships. It is great to see him on the top dias finally this year. Dean was just as happy, after trying for many years to get a place, he cracked a 3rd place. He gave out a big cheer of finally & punched his fist in the air. A little bit of team work finally paid off.

All in all it was a successful day for Marconi Cycling Club, with placegetters in all graded races. Congratulations to all the other winners, everyone should be proud of their performances. It was good to see so many of our regular Tuesday Night riders winning & getting places.

Thanks to Marconi's Ed Daniels for taking some photo's, I will have these online within the next couple of days. I had a sneak peek & he took roughly 500 shots. So chances are you will be able to show your friends some action shots of yourself.

So checkout http://www.marconicyclingclub.com over the coming days.

Special thanks to Walton's from Alpha Cycles & Dural Cycles for bring the latest bikes out to display & for putting up a pair of Speedplay Zero pedals for the raffle. Some lucky fellow will be getting lower through those corners now.

Thanks to ABC Bikes for their support over the years. They kindly donated the 1st place prize of a MTB for the raffle. And from what I have heard there could be a conspiracy happening, as the winner from last years raffle, won again this year. I am afraid to ask how much he spent.

And don't forget that there will be racing again this Tuesday Night at the Dragway.
