Handicap race, November 26, 2006
Ocvirk takes out mass sprint
Roger Ocvirk took out the final sprint from a bunch of 20 riders on Sunday in the 27km Handicap at the Illawarra Cycle Club.
The race started with the limit riders having 7 minutes on Scratch which contained class riders such as Josh Wall, Tim Morris, Danny Hennessy and Aaron Terechvos.
With Limit maintaining a good pace for the first lap they were able to keep the minute gap for the first lap. The big moves where being made further back in the field with the 3:30min bunch [Joe Pereria, Ian Robinson, Joe Chiaverini and Emma Lovelock - Sutherland] catching the 5min group of Tony Burke, Joe Williams, Phil Jones and Lionel Covington just after the start of the 2nd lap.
This bunch was moving well with Chiaverini, Kniepp and Lovelock all going to the front and keeping the pace high. Despite their hard work, they were being chased hard and the gap was closing down between them and the combined 1:30 and 2:30 bunches. The groups finally caught each other on the third lap and were moving along at a blistering pace. There was very little hope of Scratchies getting to the front off this race.
Coming to the sprint Ocvirk moved off third well with about 150 metres to go and came around Hull taking the finish with a good turn of speed leaving a gap of 5 metres back to Hull and Bennett fighting it out for minor placings.
While they weren't able to get to the front of the race, scratchies rode extremely well to finish not far behind the bunch with the final sprint between Morris and Terechvos going right to the wire with Morris being piped before the line by Terechvos who took out Fastest Time for the day.
