Riverland Cycling Club

Victoria, Tuesday November 7, 2006

Tuesday night saw an awesome turnout for the opening race of the 2006-2007 Criterium series. Twenty riders nominated for the event; past, present and new members all set to compete for line honours. Handicapping was the major challenge for the night with seven riders making their club return and three new riders ready to launch into the local racing scene.

It was clear from early that there would be major changes in the grading line up with some new riders absolutely drilling their fellow competitors. B Grade's Matthew Benson's 40minute ride will see him promoted to A Grade along with Josh Steele; who this week rode in B Grade, as it was his first race back since injuring his shoulder blade. The pair took the lead and powered ahead of the field and didn't look back, averaging 36km/hr they were actually faster than A Grade, hence their promotion next week. Janine Webb who recently took part in the 20th Anniversary ride at Barmera returned to the racing circuit with a commanding performance in D Grade. It was evident from the start that the remaining riders would have to battle it out for the minor placing's and, like many other members that night look forward to next week's line up.

Although the first Criterium of the series may have been the starting point for a number of riders, it didn't stop the competitiveness of the groups. C Grades Ruth Strout, Kym Ferber, Claire Treilibs, Craig Spilsbury and Simon Woods managed to keep it together for the entire 35minutes. Riding strong as a group and each taking a spin at the front ensured their energy had not been spent for the final lap. Spilsbury jumped the field and started his sprint from the back straight, Woods was determined to get his first win of the season catching him at the finish to claim first ahead of Spilsbury and Treilibs.

Sunday is the return of the Track season with all members and interested parties encouraged to come along. Further information is available at www.riverlandcyclingclub.com
