Saturday's racing was over a 38km circuit starting at Burgess Signs in Seymour heading out to Mangalore then to the service road on the Goulburn Valley Highway then past Mangalore airport to Avenel and return to finish on Avenel Road approx 4km from Seymour.
Sixteen riders faced the starter for the race with Kevin Swan the first rider to start with a 15 mins handicap followed by Rob Ekberg and Rhys Melville of a handicap of 8 mins, The next group off 4 mins was led by Kevin Bartlett, with Peter Jenkins, Bret Bender, Daryl O'Keefe, Daniel Sanders. Followed by Warren Osborne, Bret Loney, Shane Edwards, Ian Baker and Glenn Christensen who had a 1 min 30 secs start on the scratch bunch.
The final group to start had a 15 minute gap to Swan and was led in the chase by Ron Birgess, Alan Adams, Kevin Simmons and Silas Fisher.
At about the halfway point the 1'30' and scratch bunch ahd joined with the 4 min bunch trying to catch Ekberg, Melville and Swan.
On reaching Avenel the 4 min bunch had combined with the leaders to try and hold the chasers at bay but at the Mangalore Hotel with 6km to go the race had come together with a likely sprint finish to end the race. With approxx 1 1/2 km to go Ron Burgess made a vicious attack to ride clear of the finishing bunch,with 500 meters to go Alan Adams tried to make it a one-two-three finish for the scratch riders but Alan did not take into account the superb finishing burst of Bret Loney who caught Adams, Fisher and Burgess on the line to take out a thrilling finish. Kevin Simmons was next followed by Glenn Christensen.
