Glossop, South Australia, September 18, 2005
Riverland Cycling Club members braved windy conditions during their 42km race around the Glossop area on Sunday, with riders riding below their expected average speeds. Gordon Lawton rode from limit, setting a good pace before being caught by the cruising double act of Angelo Ylia and Bob Pankhurst. Ruth Strout and Brett Carpenter set a consistent speed which saw them leading the rest of the field until the third lap when they were caught by Amanda Steele and Mick Grey. Lee Stevens and Kel Elleway rode together for part of the way after Elleway had a nasty spill early on the first lap which eventually saw him retire, leaving Stevens to battle through the persistent northerly wind solo. The breakaway duo of Ylia and Pankhurst claimed the podium finish of first and second, with Lawton claiming a third not too far behind. The rest of the field slowly clambered across the line after an energy-sapping final dash into the headwind on the home straight, with Stevens claiming fastest time.
Next weekend will see riders compete for the last in the Winter Series trophies in the prestigious Loxton Traders' Handicap Road Race, starting at the Hollywood Store at 9:30am on Sunday. There will be a weekly social ride starting at 8:30am leaving from the Redgum Cafe in Berri on Saturday morning also, with all road riders welcome.
