Riverland Cycling Club

Barmera, South Australia, September 11, 2005

Barmera hosted last weekend's race meeting for the Riverland Cycling Club, with a 23km course starting at the yacht club and travelling twice out and back to the Morgan turn off alongside Lake Bonney.

A strong westerly wind made the riders work hard and intermittent showers added to the excitement as the handicapped riders raced to catch their competitors in front. Brett Carpenter, Angelo Ylia and Bob Pankhurst caught Gordon Lawton on the final turn for home and stayed away from the rest of the field until the final stages. Carpenter made a break from his grouping and was able to maintain his lead into the strong head wind. Kel Elleway and Josh Steele started five minutes in front of the scratch group of Hamish MacKirdy and Lee Stevens, and were able to stay away for the whole race, catching all riders besides the strong finishing Carpenter who claimed the win. Peter Weston and Ruth Strout rode strongly together but were unable to catch the other groups, while MacKirdy and Stevens were unable to make up enough ground to catch the leaders, with MacKirdy recording the fastest time for the day and fourth place.

The next race will be start at the Glossop Pony Club at 9:30am on Sunday. There will be a weekly social ride starting at 8:30am leaving from the Redgum Cafe in Berri on Saturday morning also.
Congratulations to Hamish MacKirdy for winning the A grade and Lara MacKirdy for claiming fourth in C/D-grade at last weekends' Tour of the Murray River Invitational Criterium in Mildura. Congratulations also to Peter Weston for recording a phenomenal 40 minute 10km run in the Murray-Pioneer fun run and taking first prize. For more details visit http://www.riverlandcyclingclub.com
