In very hot conditions the Calvary Health Care Northern Vets held their first Major race for the year.The Fingal Valley 50 was held in conjunction with the Fingal Valley Festival, and was sponsored by them also.
The race was held on a flat out and back course and run at a record pace, with the fastest time averaging over 42km/h. The limit markers, with a 16 minutes start on scratch did a great job, with Bob Mason only getting caught with 6km to go.The scratch bunch had rounded up the rest of the field with 14km to go, and with a lot of attacks, and the pace hovering between 45-50km/h, the less fit riders were finding the going very tough.
Approaching the finish with only about 20 riders left in the front bunch Hobart's Justin McMullen came off Ian Leighton's wheel to win by the narrowest of margins, with Leighton also taking out fastest time.
