Riverland Cycling Club

Cooltong, South Australia, July 31, 2005

The Riverland Cycling Club held its weekly road race at Cooltong on Sunday. In perfectly still and sunny conditions, Bob Pankhurst, Angelo Ylia and Gordon Lawton rode from limit with a reduced lap handicap. Josh Steele, Mick Grey and Peter Weston employed excellent teamwork when they left at the 2 minute mark, with each man taking turns in the lead for their group, and Grey riding strongly.

Lee Stevens left the starting line with Kel Elleway 8 minutes after limit; however, a punctured tube saw Stevens retire on the fourth lap. Hamish MacKirdy and visiting Coomealla Cycling Club members Mike Murdoch and Dion Bassi-Anstee had 14 minutes to claw back for their scratch handicap. Murdoch made two attempts at a breakaway from his grouping but his plans were thwarted by a determined MacKirdy and Bassi-Anstee. The trio reached high speeds along the course to be just shy and in sight of the finishing group. MacKirdy's tactical expertise saw him outgun the interstate visitors in the sprint for the fastest time honours, notching up a phenomenal 39.5km/h average in the process. Ylia claimed his first win for the winter season in an exciting and close bunch sprint finish, closely followed by Pankhurst and a rapidly improving Josh Steele.

The next race will be the Murtho Stan Heritage Memorial Handicap trophy race, starting at 9:30am on Sunday. There will be a weekly social ride starting at 8:30am leaving from the Redgum Cafe in Berri on Saturday morning also. For more details visit http://www.riverlandcyclingclub.com
Congratulations to Hamish and Lara MacKirdy for recording fastest time honours in their respective categories in South Australian Veteran racing last weekend.
