Soto triumphs

The forecast winds and possible drizzle didn't eventuate so the riders had reasonably good conditions for the scratch races at Huntley last Saturday afternoon.

There was a large number of riders in the A grade 45km scratch race which made for very interesting racing. The attacks came thick and fast right from the start. Steve Franklin charged off the front only to be brought back a few kilometres later. His attack was quickly followed by Graham Rutter and Tim Morris; their break looked promising but the bunch was not letting them get away.

The decisive move came in the second half of the third lap when Frank Soto eased off the front. It didn't look dangerous till the BR Digital Security rider Luke Dale bridged across to Soto. The two knew they had to give it their all for the move to succeed and they did. With a few of Dale's team mates not assisting in the chase the leaders eventually built a gap of nearly 2 minutes on the pursuers. In one of the closest sprints for a long time Soto was victorious from Dale by half a tyre, their time was 1:07:04. Rutter broke away from the bunch in the last kilometre to claim third place in 1:09:39.

The riders in the B grade 36km race just put their head down and tried to burn each other off. Aaron Terechovs, riding in his first scratch race ever, was not overawed and put in a big effort. With under 2km to go to the finish Daniel Daly attacked down the outside, Dean Marcinkowski was quick to respond and went with him. Although Terechovs missed the initial move he got out off the seat and rode across to the other two. In a real power sprint Marcinkowski won from Terechovs and Daly in 57:53.

C grade had a similar scenario to B grade. Knowing they had 36km to race no one was willing to put in a big enough effort to get away. Jason Johnson had one or two digs just to see who would respond and the whole bunch chased him down. The youngest and smallest rider, Thomas Griffith, knew he couldn't match the acceleration of the more experienced riders so he lead the sprint out early. Half way down the finishing straight he looked like the winner, but Johnson put the after burners on and mowed him down in the last 50m. Carlo Paiola was tucked onto Johnson's wheel and took out second with Griffith hanging on for third. Their time was 1:00:09.

There is no local race next week as the Nowra Interclub is on.
