Silveri triumphs over class field

The first clear morning for 3 weeks saw a near record field of fifty riders turn up for the 27km scratch race last Sunday.

It has been a long time since A grade had twenty starters, which made the victory by Daniel Silveri even more impressive. The attacks came fast and furious right from the start. As usual Adam Rourke launched a sizzling attack in the first kilometre of the race, unfortunately for him he later punctured.

Dylan Forbes, Danny Hennessy, Craig Paull, Peter Jones and Adrian Cooper all contributed to making it a very demanding race. But it was Silveri who got his wheel infront over the last 10 metres to take the win from Hennessy and Cooper.

James Thornton is better known for his Iron Man efforts but he produced a fine sprint to win the B grade race. In a very animated race that saw Thornton, Ben Lohse, Andrew Stewart and Lionel Covington pushing the pace at every opportunity it was all to no avail as the result came down to a eleven man sprint.

Lohse led the sprint out with Covington and Joe Pereira close to the head of affairs. Thornton was too powerful and won by a bike length from Lohse and Stewart.

Possibly due to large number of riders willing to assist in bringing any dangerous moves back together the C grade bunch was also still together in the sprint for the line. Tony Burke just edged Jason Johnson out for the win with Sal Caballo crossing the line in third place.

David Hull did the lion's share of the work in the D grade race but didn't leave enough in the tank for the sprint finish. Vince O'Dwyer showed the others a clean pair of wheels with an impressive sprint. Megan Wilkie scored a well-deserved second and Hull filled out the top three.

There is no local race next week due to the Southern Divisional races at Breadalbane.

The next Club race, a 41km scratch race, will be on Saturday the 10th of April at 2pm. Group 9 is to marshall.
