Trek Bikes Summer Series Rd 10

Heffron Park, March 9, 2004

Roland Lang triumphs in the heat

The King of the Masters Homebush Bay circuit, Roland Lang timed his run perfectly to outsprint Mathew Lucas in round 10 of the Trek Bike Summer Series. It was a B and C grade finish as A grade failed to make up the 1m 30 time gap over the 30km race distance, but series leader Jose Rodriguez still holds onto a handy 7 point lead for the first prize of a Trek 5500 Carbon OCLV with only 2 races left.

Summer returned with a vengeance in Sydney on Tuesday as one of the highest March temperatures on record saw the mercury touch 40o c, so not unexpectedly numbers were slightly down as many riders obviously headed to Bondi for relief from the heat. Fifty riders lined up in B and C grades with only 11 in A grade to sweat it out around Heffron Park.

It was going be a big ask from the reduced A grade bunch to close the gap, especially in the absence of the Rod McGee lead La Francaise des Jeux train and an apparent reluctance from the Easts riders to make a go of it. Surely their reluctance to dig in wouldn't have anything to do series leader Jose Rodriguez recently opting for a new sponsorship deal with FRF Couriers?

The B and C grade bunches came together after only 8 laps and apart from some enthusiasm on the sprint prime laps, the racing was pretty pedestrian, either as a result of the heat or maybe from the lack of urgency when it became obvious with three laps to go that A grade weren't going to be contesting the sprint.

There were a couple of moves to create a break, with one coming from super vet Liam Kelly who was making a return to racing in B grade after fracturing his elbow in January. The field was altogether on the bell and coming into the sprint it was Trent Iliffe who made the early move, but at 150 metres to go it looked like Mat Lucas was going to grab the points and the win until a well judged run on the inside gave the Roland Lang his first Tuesday night win at Heffron Park.

Mat Lucas's second place still netted him a valuable four points in the series and moves him into third place overall. Southern Cross junior and C grade rider, Chris Guillan squeezed in for third with Trent Iliffe fourth and Gavin Bates fifth.

Keegan Atchinson now leads the C grade pointscore by picking up three points for finishing second to Guillan. In the A grade sprint which was only for the money and no glory, Dave Stewart went home with the envelope.
