Southern Vets Host Successful State Titles

This weekend was the South Australian Veteran cycling council Individual State Time Trial championships held in McLaren Flat hosted by the Southern Districts Veterans and Ladies cycling club. Weather conditions were not very good for cycling with strong winds and intermittent rain making the riders task more difficult than necessary. The weather also contributed to a smaller turnout than usual with a number of riders withdrawing on the day. The 20km course was difficult with a number of steep climbs starting in McLaren Flat and running through the Blewitt Springs and Douglas Gully. Gold medals were awarded in nine male categories and four ladies categories. Riders from throughout the State who held a veterans council racing licence were eligible to compete.

Hamish McCirdy was the winner in the men's category 1 for males aged between 35 and 39 years. He had strong opposition from James Russell and Brent Telford. In the male category 2 for riders aged 40 to 44 years Peter Moore showed his strength to retain his gold-medal status which he had attained last year. He was followed by David Graham and a surprised Neville Elliott to took the bronze. Men's category three produced the most surprises on the day with Mick Tagell taking the crown from Paul Bell. Tim Kirsten took silver and hard-working Norman Hoy claimed the bronze. In men's category four the results went exactly as expected the very strong David Gomer claiming the gold from John Giles and Sid Carter. In category 5 Ray Deed showed his strength once again to claim gold and the State crown from Jimmy Olds and Marcus Roberts. Category 6 was a win to Neville Bruce with the silver going to Wayne Stevens and the bronze to Martin Boas. Wolfgang Harder took gold in the men's category 7 to claim his fourth time trial championship of the year. Harder's efforts have seen him win the Southern Veterans club championship, the Veterans and Ladies cycling club championship (Outer Harbour club), the Maryborough Pacific Pan Pacific championships and now the State championships. In men's category 7 two riders competed for the gold with Tom Trowbridge winning out over Ron Daniels. The oldest rider on the day Keith Nockles was awarded gold in the 75 plus category.

In the ladies competition Audrey Pearce won gold in the 60-64 category 7 group, Kath Jones called in the 55-59 group, Marie Bates in category 5 for 50 to 54 -year-old ladies and Audrey Johnson held out Trudy Fenton in category three for 44 to 45-year-olds. Lisa MacCirdy claimed gold in category two to make a State double for herself and her husband.

Next week the Southern Districts Veteran and Ladies cycling club moves to Macclesfield for the Adelaide Steel Security Race Day sponsored by David and Jackie Howkins. The race is a 2 Div handicap over a 52km course which works its way through the Adelaide Hills taking in a Echunga, Meadows, Ashbourne, Strathalbyn and Macclesfield.
