Russell takes his third victory

By Barry Timmins

Wind, cold conditions and rain greeted the field in Sundays Graded club scratch event raced over a challenging course that took in the long climb through Peters Creek to Kuitpo, Kangarilla, Mclaren Vale and McLaren Flat. The course and conditions took their toll on the riders with a number of grades breaking up on the long climb to Kuitpo.

A Grade was another victory to James Russell to take his 2004 tally to three with the club. It also made him a winner two weeks in a row and perhaps signals a return to the form of previous years. He led a spirited John Giles and a hard working Dean Bevelander to the line In B Grade Neville Elliot continues to race with exceptional form claiming his second win for the year and his eighth result for the season. He leads the club rankings with Gavin McMahon and the in form John Giles also on eight results. New rider Sam Allen held out a fast finishing Rob Gaggini for the places.

C Grade saw Fhillipo Imessi take his second victory for 2004 to earn his own personal record the most wins in a year with the club having previously one only other time in 2002. He is clearly enjoying scratch races having taken out C grade in the Dean Stephens Event last month. Nick Jeitner took his first result for the year to take second with Neil Ties taking third to open his major results tally for the season.

D Grade was a tough battle with an accident taking out Angela Fleming on the run home from Kangarilla after clipping another rider's wheel. She seemed cheerful after the race and was more concerned about her bike than herself. She declined a photograph but sustained some facial injuries and will have a nasty black eye for a while. The grade was won by a very strong Kent Dredge who had considerable success earlier this year in the veterans Classic run in conjunction with the 'Tour Down Under' winning a number of intermediate sprints during the road race and finishing sixth overall. It was his first victory with the Southern Vets and his second club result for the year. Robert Freak took second to take his tally to three results for the season and continue his regular pattern of winning a place every month since May. Graham Hancox was third for his second result this year.

E Grade had a very vigorous contest with strong riding on the climb out of Peters Creek that broke up the pack. Carolyn Salisbury took the victory on the line from Peter Blackburn and a hard working Kate Logan. Salisbury followed up her victory at the Milang crits to take her victories to two for the year. Logan is the current club champion in category 5 in the road race and time trial and is in a rich vein of form at present. Blackburn showed his strength on the climb and always looked like he could take it out today. This was his second result in scratch races with the club this year following up a second in June.

Next week are the State Road racing championships at the Range.
