Jones too quick

An excellent size field of 51 riders took part in the 27.5km scratch races last Sunday. The were were good size bunches in each of the four grades

There was a strong field lined up for the Elite A-grade race. A few riders had made the step up from the lower ranks and many were coming into top form after some big training weeks in preparation for next week's Canberra 2-day tour.

Adam Rourke gave sure indication that he was ready for a hard race as he attacked strongly from the gun. The other riders were quite happy to ease into the race as Rourke's advantage grew to almost a minute. On the second lap Luke Dale and Seth Collins bridged across to Rourke and this trio looked very dangerous coming up to half distance. Alarm bells were sounding in the bunch which was lined out and working hard to nullify the dangerous attack. Strong turns from Adrian Cooper, Peter Jones and Tim Morris and a speed of around 60kms/hr on the flat made sure the break was short lived.

The attacks continued but the bunch continually clawed their way back. In the end the field lined up for a headwind sprint to the line. Steve Fraklin led the sprint out with Morris making a kick for the line with 200 metres to go. But it was Jones who was too strong in the end taking the win with a well timed sprint. Danny Hennesey didn't give in all the way to the line and just pipped Morris on the line for second.

One of the five new affiliations on the day was Hans Batteard. A few of the riders in the A1 race probably wished he had stayed at home. Batteard kept the pace high at all times pushing more than one or two riders into the red zone. Jeff Gray, Peter Evans, Michael Comensoli, Mark Davis and new member Garry Mandy all worked hard during the race. Lionel Covington was looking in good form until he unfortunately had a puncture.

On the last lap Dave Russel tried to get away but he was quickly chased down. With about a kilometer to go Comensoli attempted to ride off the front of the bunch but he was caught in the last 200m. Davis had bridged accross to Comensoli and had enough juice left in the tank to take the win from Joe Pereira and Gray.

The B grade race marked the return of Danny Poropat after a five year racing absence. Poropat showed he was a class above the other nine riders, seemingly stringing the bunch out whenever he felt like it. However, the other riders refused to let go of Poropat’s wheel and when his surge on the third ascent of Hooker Hill failed to split the bunch, a sprint finish looked inevitable.

Dave Morris put in an attack with 1.5km to go to the line taking Warren Poole with him. The duo was soon reeled in and the sprinters started lining up. Mark O’Keefe won the C grade sprint finish from Tony Burke with Justin Lathlean finishing third.

They started at a steady pace which did not last for long with early attacks coming from James Thornton and Craig Paul, Jenny Davis worked hard early but as the race progressed found the the pace a little strong. Craig Paul, who has only had a handful of rides, proved to be the strongest rider through out the race and should soon find himself moving up through the grades very soon.

When it came to the business end of the bike race it was Mitchell Harris who took out the sprint after working quietly in the bunch throughout the race ,he was followed in by James Thornton and Steve Newman, full credit must goe to all the riders in c-grade because when times were checked it was found that they had ridden a faster time than B-grade.

Next week's race is a 27km handicap, any riders who have not already entered shopuld contact Lionel on 42269278. Group 1 is to marshall.
