Preview: Bayern Rundfahrt celebrates 30 years

By Monika Prell in Kelheim

The Bayern Rundfahrt, which for many years existed in the shadow of the Deutschland Tour, has survived the crisis in German cycling to remain a prestigious international race. With five ProTour teams competing plus 11 Pro Continental and Continental teams, it's an event that is capable of attracting quality riders.

In five stages over 740.5km riders will traverse east, south and west Bayern. Wednesday's first stage from Kelheim to Mühldorf am Inn covers 196.3km, with two second category mountain passes and three intermediate sprints ensuring plenty of attacking riding.

Stage two from Mühldorf am Inn to Ruhpolding is 173.6km journey that includes two first category mountains and two intermediate sprints with a climber the likely candidate to take the yellow jersey.

But they will have to pay attention during the third stage; three intermediate sprints and two category two mountains will entice those with ambitions for the general classification to attack during the 178.2 kilometres from Bad Aibling to Schrobenhausen.

Nevertheless, there will be another opportunity for overall contender during the fourth stage individual time trial over 26km. Friedberg will host the test against the clock with a big crowd anticipated due to Saturday being the first day of the Pentecost holidays.

The final stage, a 166.4-kilometre test from Friedberg to Gunzenhausen is a course where a few surprises could be sprung over two mountain passes - first and second category respectively - that could see a little shake up of the various classifications.

Defending champion Christian Knees (Milram) heads a strong peloton that contains the likes of his teammate Gerald Ciolek, Koldo Fernández de Larrea (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Elk-Haus' Steffen Radochla and Cervélo TestTeam's Heinrich Haussler.
