Eibegger breaks into race lead

Austrian Markus Eibegger (ELK Haus) claimed a solo victory on Bayern Rundfahrt's second stage, after taking a six second gap over a small group at the finish in Ruhpolding. The 24-year-old rider's team-mate Stefan Denifl claimed second place in the six man sprint behind, with Milram's Linus Gerdemann claiming third place. Riders trickled in behind but the main peloton was a massive 25:33 minutes behind the stage winner.
Enthusiastic school kids waved farewell to the peloton as the days stage commenced in Mühldorf am Inn. Numerous attacks were made early on, including one by race leader André Greipel (Team Columbia-Highroad), but the peloton wouldn't let anyone escape.
After averaging 50 kilometres per hour for the race's first 37 kms, a small group finally launched a successful attack. Michael Morkov (Saxobank), Thomas de Gendt from the team Topsport Vlaanderen, Marcel Barth (Thüringer Energie team) and Garmin -Slipstream's Ricardo van der Velde were able to bring a little distance between themselves and the peloton.
Soon after Milram's Peter Wrolich, Eric Baumann (Nutrixxion), Euskaltel - Euskadi's Markel Irizar, Simon Geschke (Skil Shimano), Geoffroy Lequatre (Agritubel), Oleg Chuzhda and Dioni Galparsoro (Contentpolis AMPO), Team Columbia-Highroad's Marcel Siegberg, Daniel Musiol (Vorarlberg Corratec), Cérvelo's Roger Hammond and van der Velde's team-mate Kilian Patour were able to join the breakaway group. Just before the first intermediate sprint in Teisendorf, Florenz Knauer (Kuota Indeland) also crossed to the 15 in front.
Barth claimed the sprint from Lequatre and Baumann as the peloton fell back to 4:10 minutes, while it tried to figure out who should do the work.
O the first categorised Hochschwarzeck - Ramsau the breakaway group and the peloton fragmented considerably. Four riders passed the mountain classification first, led by de Gendt, followed by Lequatre, Irizar and Geschke.
The breakaway riders regrouped down the dangerous descent, which included gradients up to 22 percent. Four riders were dropped from the group on the second pass of Hochschwarzeck, while De Gendt took the mountains points ahead of Denifl, Gerdemann und Montfort.

At kilometer 138 eight riders, including Linus Gerdemann (Milram), Saxobank's Lasse Bochmann, Sylvain Calzati and David le Lay (Agritubel), Maxime Monfort (Team Columbia-Highroad), Elk Haus' Eibegger and Denifl and Garmin Slipstream's Thomas Peterson, were able to form a group at the front. A kilometre later Eibegger attacked and was able to stay marginally ahead of the other seven riders.
Gerdemann was working hardest in the group as the stage battle began unfolding. Eibegger proved resilient however, claiming the stage win and general classification lead.
After a 65 kilometre transfer from Ruhpolding to Bad Aibling, the third stage from Bad Aibling to Schrobenhausen will included three intermediate sprints and two category two mountains throughout its 178.2 kilometres.
