Rolling through Bavaria

Stefan Schumacher will look to defend his title at this year's Bayern Rundfahrt, a race which gets off to a big start this year. Despite its location, it is historically known as a race for sprinters and time trialers. This year's edition, however, could favor a climber, as the very first stage features two ranked climbs plus a mountaintop finish.

Six ProTour Teams will be at the start this year: CSC, Gerolsteiner, Milram, Credit Agricole, High Road and Bouygues Telecom. They are joined by seven Professional Continental teams and four Continental teams.

This year's race could be decided on the hilly first stage, which runs 175.4 km from Freyung to the hilltop finish at Sankt Englmar. The second and third stage are more rolling than mountainous, and offer themselves to escape groups. If the overall classification is still close, the 25.9 kilometre individual time trial in and around Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale will certainly break up the standings. The races finishes Sunday, June 1, in Erlangen.

Schumacher has not been able to repeat his successes from the past years and is still looking for his first win this season. If he falters, his team-mates, climber Bernhard Kohl or German champion Fabian Wegmann, might be able to take the race. High Road will send Marcus Burghardt, who is recovering rapidly from knee surgery and is eager to test his condition with the Tour de France in mind. CSC won't sent the popular Jens Voigt, who is currently riding the Giro d'Italia, but it is sending Stuart O'Grady and Bradley McGee, both of whom broke collarbones in stage four of the Giro and are hoping to regain some form in Germany.
